Isn't that a bit ageist? In my opinion, we shouldn't differentiate between older presenters and younger ones. They should all be treated the same. But, ok, seeing as you asked..........here are my favourites of a certain age and era at ITV News. Tut!

Where exactly have you been looking then. Even just counting the "ITV News" years, I don't think many here would consider that to be the best era. As usual I'm being presumptuous, but from what I've read here over the years I think most people would count 2004-2006 as being the best "ITV News era", though if you consider ITN too I think we're going back to the 90's.

Hi,
I have decided to set up a thread about ITV News from the year dating 1999-2004.
I have chosen this era, mainly because it was possibly the best era of the ITV News (From what I have seen on the internet).

I think the best era for news on ITV was between 1995 and 1999, though 1999-2004 is a close second. I never really cared for the 2004-2006 look. I thought it was a bit cold and clinical.
Between 1995 and 1999, pretty much everything was perfect - very authoritative music, clean and stylish graphics, a simple yet effective atrium set and fantastically detailed Big Ben titles. As far as I'm concerned, everything else pales in comparison.

At least ITV News' music from that period survives unchanged... in Slovenia, that is:

Love the clock. They don't get the point of the bongs though!
That era just gets better and better with age, and if as they looked to the 80's for the revamped News at Ten they took inspiration from these for a revamped graphics package for the other bulletins it really would still look fantastic.

And they love ITV News music so much, they're also using the current bed over every full-screen graphic and live. You wouldn't see mullets like that over here, though.

Definitely not. The music sounded so much better back then. The modern synthesised music is nowhere near as good as the old themes which were performed using real instruments. The bulletins occupied the current London Tonight studio and had a wonderful real view of the ITN atrium, which looked fantastic. The Big Ben titles, designed by Lambie-Nairn, were really detailed and worked perfectly with the opening music, which built up a sense of tension as the bulletin started. The astons and graphics were plain and simple and did the job perfectly.
That said, I do like the new look studio of ITV News. I think the London skyline is a major improvement. However, this is let down by tired, weak, synthesised music, and graphics that don't properly match the other presentation elements. For instance, the studio is now predominantly blue, as are the astons, yet the opening bong sting (clockface) is still teal!
If there is something good to say about modern news presentation, then I will definitely say it. However, I genuinely think that ITV News was at its best between 1995 and 1999, and I agree with Brekkie: ITV would do well to take some inspiration from that era for a future relaunch.

Completely agree there - considering the opening is now just a sting, it wouldn't have taken too much effort to come up with something new to go with the fantastic new backdrop, and change all the astons accordingly. After all they create some sort of graphics on a daily basis to illustrate news stories. Even something as simple as a reworked version of the News at Ten stings would be fine, or failing that dropping the opening graphic all together and beginning with a studio shot.
I also wonder now that News at Ten is back as it was whether it might be time to drop the bongs from the other bulletins.
