UKIP to be treated as a 'major party' by UK broadcasters during coverage of the forthcoming European Elections in May:

However, European election coverage specifically focusing on Scotland will not be required to give prominence to UKIP because Ofcom considered the party's level of support in Scotland to be "low".

That lets BBC Scotland and STV off the hook.

There is an issue here in terms of network coverage. Basically, Ukip will be getting disproportionate coverage in shows broadcast to Scotland from London despite having a very low level of support in the country, whereas the SNP will inevitably receive less coverage than you would expect from a party that governs your country as its support in the rest of the UK is zero. It has the potential to debase political comment in this country.

Of course, there's no way of fixing that other than independence, which is a bit of a big step to take just to deal with this issue....

To be fair SNP support for westminster is far lower than for the Scottish elections. who turns to the UK pres for details in connection to Scotland?>

BBC Scotland and STV leader debates had snp.

Can UKIP be on the BBC anymore than they already are? Nigel Farage practically lives at Broadcasting House.

I mean this is ridiculous just because they have achieved a certain result in the polls which don't mean anything is no indication of whether they should be regarded as a major party. They have no MPs, MSPs, AMs or MGLAs where as non-extremist parties do and don't have this much coverage.

But the broadcasts in questions are for the European elections where they are a major party. It would be pretty stupid for a party almost certain to come 1st or 2nd on a UK wide basis to be given less coverage than the Lib Dems who will probably come 4th on a UK wide basis.

Fair enough, but it's just my hatred of extremist politics that gets me going. In some forecasts though the Lib Dems will be coming 5th behind the Greens - so should they get more coverage than the Lib Dems?

They should get an equal amount of coverage - in theory.

In theory they should, in theory the Greens should have more coverage than UKIP for Westminster Politics but seeing a Green Party member on TV is a rarity, the BNP are on almost as much as the Greens. I'm not a Green Party supporter but I think it is unfair that they get such disproportionate air time particularly when UKIP constantly spouts his 'Anti-Climate Change' bull every 5 minutes.
