New York's 24 hour news channel drops the 3D extruded graphics packages for a simple, colour coded, flat graphics with a simple theme music, that wouldnt cause an eye to blink in Europe. Sadly the new music dumped the famous NY1 signature mnemonic that was heard on the channel for decades. Overall its a very simple package for a channel that is the lifeblood of information for the entire city of New York. Apparently the new owners of the channel, Charter, will roll this graphics package out to their other 24hr channels.

Love it. Clean, understated and authoritative. It doesn't scream at me like other NY or US local newscasts.

I wonder how it'll fare in the NY market though. I can see it doing great but at the same time, a lot of it could be too "dosile" for American tastes, which I suspect are far more used to television news blaring breaking news alerts and polluting screens with garish graphics.

Outdated stereotypes aside.....Im sure NY1 will do just fine. They have always been a 'just the facts' type of operation since its inception and has continued to do that same thing. With 'eyewitness" format of the regular channel NY1 has always been the "tv fireplace' around which all New Yorkers turn to across the day. As its always on, and will likely continue to do so.

I don't think it's correct to say that the stereotype is outdated. You admitted such in your opening post - the new NY1 look is very different market.

Compare it to any other major news organisation in New York except PBS and you'll see that the news organisations are by-and-large very sensationalist and in-your-face. And many of those organisations are far more popular than NY1 ever will be.

Not sure that’s the case in New York, where the local tv is arguably a lot more understated than elsewhere. WNBC news is rather classy looking.

NY1's new set looks very cheap. Looks like it's just a green screen job - is that the case?

I realise their previous set wasn't particularly fancy, though.

That's actually a temporary set they're using. They are getting a new one in October as per morning anchor Pat Kiernan

There's nothing 'classy looking' about a botched Clickspring set and a DIN-infected graphics package straight from 2007.

Yikes.

You and I clearly have differing ideas of what constitutes classy. It’s not as nice now as the previous look, but it’s still a million times better than elsewhere in the US.
