Surprised by what I'm reading about Geeta. It all sounds so unlike her. Confused

To me it looks like the fire service know it can't be saved and are just containing it rather than trying to put it out per se.

They is not that much left to burn - bar interior stuff in the towers prehaps.

One of the biggest problems is if/when the scaffolding collapses in on itself. Its looking pretty precarious in the middle.

It also looks like one of the towers to the left of the main fire is licking flame too.

Not starting conspiracies here but this doesn't look like an accident.

Well the fire did start near the scaffolding so it could be building related. Of course it could be the renovations allowed an non accident fire to be started.
It might be possible to remove the scaffolding while it is burning.

We've now got a report from Yvette Cooper, live on the ground.

The pictures from Paris very briefly were full HD resolution ( in fact the presenters gasped at the detail) but it tuned back to mush again. I suspect the idea of using 4G ( rather than sat or microwave) in this sort of environment is highlighting the pitfalls ?

A good fill gap until the sat trucks are in place, I'm sure BBC/Sky will have their Europe trucks on the way. 3 hour drive from Belguim which I assume they are still at from EU Council.

Isn't Christian Fraser in France?

I would assume either Christian or Katya Adler will be dispatched to the scene.

The BBC News Special between 1900 and 2000 (basically Beyond 100 Days) was excellent. Calm, reflective and with a good range of guests (many of who I guess may have already been lined up for the French politics special they were planning).

While Jon and Matthew have both spend considerable time covering Paris and I believe Katty has mentioned holidays there on air on multiple occasions it isn't within any of their current job roles. Matthew is probably due to do something for today tomorrow morning so can't really continue, while Jon is likely to be on the Ten for something to do with Trump.

I didn't really expect this fire to happen at all.

It's really gutting to hear that all of the major art works associated with the Cathedral could now become completely destroyed & will never be seen again as per reports & sentiments from an architectural historian speaking on France 24.

My 1st source on this story was from RTÉ News at Six One with Catriona Perry & Brian Finn.

Catriona Perry had given a brief report with some pictures of the spire of the cathedral just before the sports news came on air with Jacqui Hurley. There was no reporters to give more analysis of the fire during the 6.1 news bulletin. I expect more news will be given on this at 9pm which I assume is with Sharon Ni Bheolain in over 40 minutes time.

In the meantime; I have been watching the live coverage about the fire on France 24 HD. Their coverage so far has been excellent.

EDIT: James Creedon, who is their media editor, and an Irish journalist, has just reported that a lot of the artwork from inside the cathedral has been saved. Thank goodness for that. But the cathedral itself is still in very bad condition.

Never would I thought that shouty Ros Atkins would be an improvement on the hockey sticks delivery of Geeta.

Never would I thought that shouty Ros Atkins would be an improvement on the hockey sticks delivery of Geeta.

If Geeta wasn't thrown into a somewhat unfamiliar studio probably after waiting outside for several minutes unable to keep on top with developments quite possibly only expecting to do the headlines before throwing to Salford (and not even allowed to get to the desk before going on air) and expected to just get on with it she would almost certainly have been able to do a much better job.

Matthew Price has come to join Geeta. She's still interrupting guests though.

EDIT: Oh no, it was just his voice on an earlier phone recording.

Sky were very slow off the mark this evening. They had the most awful pictures that they kept replaying for what seemed like half an hour.

As so often seems to happen, although they don’t have a Paris based correspondent Dominic Waghorn happened to be in Paris and is now in vision with smoke and fire dominating the background.
