they have a good sized studio. I liked the old one but I don't think it was used to its full capacity.

Odd time I have seen Look North looks like half the studio is empty! Do all BBC Regions do the News Desk then Sofa's routine?! Maybe on the Beeb I am to used to Reporting Scotland almost mirroring the Main BBC News presentation of one anchor behind the desk!

Most of the BBC regional news programmes have a desk and a softer area with a sofa. Although not all.

Look East doesn't. Now tries to mimic the national bulletin's, a desk, and screen with the stories flashing up (which is also the weather area), a blurred News Room in the background and a flooring which stops halfway, so when they pan out, the floor turns green, instead of the grey it should be, as the grey flooring is stopped there. We've never really had a sofa area, the old Look East (Which had the current titles) has some squishy anchor chair's with the slot for the laptop's in the arm, but nothing else really. That made the desks quite empty.

Just had a preview of the new set at the end of tonight's programme. Looks huge and quite realistic (ie the newsroom seems to have some depth to it unlike some of the new sets). Desk and sofa areas in the same places.

Well they do seem to be gradually going round and updating with newsroom backings (it'll be interesting to see if Newcastle follows this trend).

Leeds has been through a couple of reincarnations - but still substantially the same set. It's such a small studio space that not quite sure how much you could do.

The Hull set is even smaller so I presume they could do something half decent.

Anyone got any pictures?

It does look pretty impressive but whether it can match the on screen warmth of the old set remains to be seen.

Don't want the surprise spoiled? Look away now . Testcard fans, carry on:

I like the look of that set, Big and National Style whilst remaining somehow regional.

Horrible desk. Again. It looks like the mini one in N9 during the local/ euro elections - yuck! They'd have been better with the TC7 one - the rim around the edge is just too thin.

Moving on to the set - it's fairly nice. I'm really not a fan of all these newsroom-style backdrops for regional news but it'll do - it could be worse. What is the newsroom backdrop on? I thought lightboxes - and they appear to be sticking the weird... well what are they??... stickers onto the backdrop itself, rather than making it part of the design.

But the Politics Show say on the blog that the street-branding used on the politics show will be put across the entire studio. So are they lightboxes or screens? And with lightboxes, how easy is it to switch between designs? (Sorry for not knowing much about them Wink)

The new set has debuted; very professional looking. A few kinks to iron out: the main shot of the presenter is too long, the Look North projector screen animation looks decidedly purple and the bottom of the desk is a bit hacky. Caps:

'Transmission rings' is what they are, all the regions shall be getting them on their backdrops.

Plenty of space compared to my Look North - though the presenter there was pretty awful

There was a time were she made two or three mistakes every bulletin. Now its down to one, and sometimes, not one screw up at all!

Lovely set though, seems to have a lot more depth to it than other regional sets.

I was a bit worried, but that bulletin has still got one of the best regional studios. Although the same basic design, it seems a lot better than BBC London and Look East, and miles better than the national N6.
