Would a change of news provider really make a huge difference? As far as the South of Scotland is concerned, it's only part of the issue. Even totally separate bulletins for the old Border and Tyne Tees areas wouldn't be enough. Border Scotland would have to be reborn to allow access to a wider range of programming for people across Scotland. I realise this is "The Newsroom" forum, but Border only really served Southern Scotland half-decently when it did start splitting output, including news, but not solely news.

I'll give you an example. This Sunday STV are screening live rugby. In the days of Border Scotland viewers in the South of Scotland would have been able to watch that fixture. Not now.

To be honest, many people I know have given up almost totally on Lookaround because so much of it is totally alien. I close by making a point I have made a number of times before. As far as the Scottish Borders is concerned, what happens in Edinburgh and the Lothians is often relevant, what happens on Tyneside (and in Cumbria!) is not.

One would hope that ITV would have the common decency to defer the non-news broadcasts to STV, and that UTV would have the pragmatism to work with STV. The latter I can see happening, the former I cannot. It's a pity that Border didn't have some level of independence -- a grand coalition of STV, Border and UTV would have benefitted the area greatly I'm sure.

Yes I do think a change in "ownership" of the local news would be of use; at least as far as the N.E. is concerned I have had enough of this area being treated as ITV's bitch and am of the view that even Murdoch would be a better prospect than ITV plc. The N.E and Border areas would be far more significant to UTV than they are to ITV, and it must be said that in the short term, especially if some sub-regional content was returned to the programme there is the prospect of some real competition in North Yorkshire for viewers -- a few bloodied noses is what the sector needs, it's been allowed to stagnate and that is the basic problem. What is bad for business is probably good for the viewer in this case.

The press release is essentially word-for-word the same as the one they published when announcing their intention to bid for the Wales tender.

Mind you, at least it's Mr Wilson's "home turf", so if the UTV consortium end up winning the tender and you're a young blonde female journalist in the Border and Tyne Tees areas, your luck's in, pet.

That's her second move to London, as she worked at ITN for a spell and GMTV briefly (and was the reporter on Carlton TV's 'Fantastic Facts' in the early nineties) between her two stints at Border.

Well, FINALLY a new studio - I hope its nice.
Also, I wonder if Carol Malia will be back for the new look - she's still on maternity leave isn't she?

If you thought that set hadn't been given much attention since the 2000 Lambie-Nairn rebrand, take a look at South Today's!! I thought that Look North had one of the best looks - I hope they don't ruin it. North West Tonight had one of the best sets in "the red era" .. those massive blue screens and tacky black floor really weren;t much of a comparison. Admittedly, it looks a lot better now.

What are Look North doing using an old BBC Newsline sting at about 9:30 into last night's online programme?

Anyone else worried they'll give it a fake newsroom look and turn it into a bigger (and different to match the space) version of BBC London/ Cambridge/ Hull?

back on the other side (and o/t) but I have enjoyed Philippa and Ian starting the year. Pam on a long holliday! (maybe using the rest up that she had to take when she was ill). Ian had the christmas period over time.

I Thought the festive bulletins were shocking... we were still getting lunchtimes, 15min evenings and ful late bulletin I would have expected localised bulletins evening and late on. Funny hearing Ian saying "Welcome to the LATE NEWS from ITV TT&B" In all seriousness in the main bulletins they fill a review of the year for 4 or 5 mins and for a couple of days they used the icy weather reports from North Yorkshire and the reporter was Trisha Gilder from ITV Calendar. Calendar used the same report and they spoke to Kerry Gosney (who we have seen maybe twice since the merger). So poor all round through the festive period
