I have tremendous sympathy for anyone affected by the floods but the fact remains that these reports are of no use (nor, to put it bluntly, interest) to local news viewers on the North East coast. I have my suspicions that they are using this as a trial with a view to installing permanent pan-regional bulletins in the not-too-distant future.

They should just get on with it.

Agreed. The current approach of trying to pretend both programmes/regions are still separate is ridiculous and leads to barmy situations like this one, ie North East Tonight reporting on news only concerning the North West.

On a side note, I see Kim Ingles ex TTTV is reporting now on Look North.

That's good to hear.

But BBC North East changed their region to cover Cumbria more than a decade ago, so aren't ITV just matching their coverage?

I do agree that it's fairly pointless to continue with the masquerade of two seperately named programmes. I suppose at least ITV thought they were rather lucky in being able to fudge "Westcountry Live" and "West Tonight" into "The West Country Tonight" down here!

...which I'd have no qualms with if they combined the bulletins and ran a Look North-style service, with the 6pm bulletin branded as Tyne Tees & Border News (or even Lookaround) rather than North East Tonight. As it is though, we are supposed to have two 15 minute opts, one of which should be leading with North East news.

I couldn't have put it better.

I don't particularly have a problem with NET covering Cumbria stories when the story is really big, but tonight we've reached the stage where the stories are more of the human interest variety, which now have little resonance in the North East. How much longer is this region going to be neglected?

The late edition of NET after the NAT is yet again... you know the rest...

Randomly... where is Wendy Gibson (Look North) these days?

To the people who are moaning about having Border News dominanting the programme this past week. You may moan and groan but we have to put up with all the geordie dominanted sport! Rolling Eyes

What sport have you lot got then that's worth reporting? Rolling Eyes

In all fairness, north east sport has no place on "Lookaround" like the flood business in Cumbria has absolutely no place as the headline news on North East Tonight. The whole set up is a joke.

I expected a post like this to pop up. Would you have appreciated a week of Lookaround covering the Morpeth floods last year?

The argument here isn't the bias that has rightly been given to Border over the past week but that coverage of the floods has dominated the 15 minutes where solely North East news should be.

Anyway, as City Road has posted above, there's no point arguing between ourselves as we're in the same boat, just at opposite ends.

It could end up like the BBC news for that area "look north"

It SHOULD. Not could. The whole pretence of a split service is ludicrous.
