With no disrespect intended to those who don't live in London, I think there's clearly a lack of understanding about how important/well known/popular Camden Market is.

It is incredibly famous the world over. I don't know figures for how many visit it, but I would hazard a guess that it is in the top ten tourist attractions in London.

Those saying 'oh god, it's just another fire at some dumpy market; if it happened outside the M25, we'd never hear of it', are probably demonstrating a lack of knowledge about the area and its popularity.

Exactly. If you've ever been there you'll realise just how popular and busy it is. Plus I know many people wondering if their favourite stalls / shops are affected by it.

This is a regional story at best - nothing will be affected of national interest (unlike the Cutty Sark for example), and frankly it's barely worth a mention in the national news at all.

I'd say it's a story of a similar size to the Cutty Sark fire (especially when the Stables market seemed to be threatened). It's the fourth most popular tourist attraction in London, and for many people across the country it holds special memories.

For the record, I live a stone's throw away from 'rural Wiltshire', and if a local pub caught fire, I wouldn't expect to see that on the national news.

However, while I do accept that London stories do tend - rightly or wrongly - to get extra attention, last night's fire (which, after all, happened at a time when there wasn't much else going on) was newsworthy.

Camden is indeed a key tourist area - but that's because it's an area of enormous cultural significance. It's featured in Dickensian literature, has been synonomous with British music, and is one of the few places you'll still find real-life punks. I've never lived in London - but still know the market as one of the most famous in Britain.

Compared to all that, the fact the the AP and MTV are based there is neither here nor there.

The best thing to come out of this was the rather tacky headline 'Amy's Winehouse burns down' Razz

Its a Camden Story for Camden people and had no relevance for anyone other than meeja trendies and so called celeb's too scattered to know where they are at the best of times. - Moving on to other news...

Indeed. For me, a dirty litter and graffiti strewn area.

Considering the amount of posts "Brekkie" makes per day I doubt he actually gets out of his own house very much, so therefore has very little understanding of what actually is and isn't popular in the real world.

Buckingham Palace, The Tower of London, Big Ben, Trafalgar Square, London Eye, The Museums, The Art Galleries, St Pauls, Tower Bridge, Hyde Park, London Zoo. I'd say all of them are much better known than Camden Market.

I was saddened to hear the news that Camden Market was on fire - even though I'm from Newcastle I remember going to Camden Market on a Sunday as a little boy and fighting through hoardes of people there, and my mum telling me about the beautiful ceilings.

I think some people on this board are arguing for argument's sake, and really should try and see things from other peoples' points of view, instead of sticking to their narrow little cosseted holes. Brekkie, you seem to be personifying arrogance at the moment. I'd recommend you spend a few days away from the computer. I hear there's a nice place in central London...

The fact that AP are there meant that it got more coverage than it would have done if it wasn't.

One of the criteria that news editors use to select stories is by how good the pics are. AP were there streaming great pics of the fire around the world yesterday evening, everyone had lots to choose from. It would have been very diffrent if it was elsewhere and all they got were some second hand pictures from Sky of them damping down the wreckage

I assume that ,since her Winehouse has burnt down, she'll now be known as Amy No-Winehouse?

"They tried to make me go to the the pub,
I said no, no. no,
Because it's burnt to the ground,
Oh, NO, NO, NO!!!!!!!!!" (sobs)
