Is it just me or does the lighting look slightly different there? If it is a seperate studio, what a waste of time/money/space. Must be twice the size of the old Teeside studio/set. And for only about 1/2 an hour of programmes daily from it...

Oh they can't win can they, I'm sure had it been a broom cupboard CSO, there would have been criticisms of how cheap it was.

How's that then? Until a few months ago on some days the main news studio would only be used once a day, with a Newcastle CSO or Teesside used for the short bulletins (Late Bulletin was always from Teesside). I think it's just a total waste of time/money for a sub-region to have a full studio running.

but are they planning ahead perhaps for when Mike retires? They may want to go back to seperate editions of the programme. The only reason they joined them back together again was when Mike defected from BBC Look North.

Are the weekend bulletins pan-regional?

Yes.

The Teeside bulletins are Weekdays at 10.55, 1.10 and 6.07-6.15 (6.07-6.24 Fridays, I belive). I think the GMTV bulletins are pan-regional, or at least they were. Of course this could have changed since they moved into Television House...

There is now also seperate services for the late news at 10.50pm.

Mike no longer has to hang around to do the update during the ITV Evening News either as Jonathan Morrell did Newcastle and Helen Ford did Teesside. They then did the seperate late bulletins for the north and south.

The Weather voiceover is back on the 11.02am forecast. Anyone know where it is recorded? Sounded more like Leeds than Gateshead to me. At any rate the voiceover is much more fun than any of those bland YTV weather presenters. Wink

if they wish to make a studio-based series in Studio 2, then they'll have to dismantle the set each time.

Well they won't, will they. There's hardly any studio-based regional production these days , and the news set can be redressed and re-lit for sports programmes, election specials and the like.

Exactly, Londoner! Smile

All this talk of the need for a committed "non-news regional programming" studio in Gateshead seems so daft, in light of the two points that Londoner has made, above.

Especially the latter point.

As far as I'm aware, the ITV Central building in Birmingham has literally no studios at all aparts from CNwest and CNeast (and possibly a CSO cupboard). Central's studio-based "non-news" regional programmes come from a re-dressed/re-lit CNwest set. And it all works fine for them.

Most "non-news" regional stuff is indeed filmed out-and-about (e.g. Heart of the Country) - as that is often the whole point of the programmes' contents

Is that thing about OfCom cutting ITV1's required number of hours-per-week of "non-news regional programming" atually affective yet? If/when it is, there'll be even less need for a seperate non-news regional studio/set.

It was always recorded at City Road in the past, generally by Oliver Martlew or another senior reporter/director. My guess is that the arrangement has not changed.

Why cannot North East Tonight just do one service and do away with the two services because by the announcement that "we now join Helen Ford in our Teeside studio" you could have already completed half of a brief news story and you still can cover the news in the north and south sub-regions in one place [i.e. just Mike Neville and sports presenter and just let Mike and a second presenter do the "more news from your region" bit in the same studio].

Better still do two programmes at six!

Is this part of a different graphics set, or are Tyne Tees engaging in a trademark "**** the standards, bwahahaha" moment already?
