SHOCK AS TELEVISION PRESENTER TAKES TIME OFF

There was shock in a small, insignifigant part of the North East of England today, as a television presenter was seen missing from unpopular regional news magazine 'North East Tonight'.

Philippa 'Pip' Thomas was covered for once again by Kim 'It's Engles, not Ingliss' Inglis, as Thomas was nowhere to be seen on screen.

A souce close to Thomas said that she took time off filming the programme to prune her (cont. p.94)

The old Maternity Hospital. As pictured on that page in 1965 which seems to have the BBC transmitter mast in shot (well thats what it looks like.)

There is an old BBC book from around 1980 (I think) and it has a photo of the studio featured with Mike Neville sat down on a comfy chair with no desk in sight.

Can't remember the book but its about the national and regional BBC Television service.

It's called "Inside BBC Television - A Year Behind the Camera" and it's from 1983. I've a copy in front of me in fact! It's a fascinating book with lots of colour pictures from lots of long-gone bits of the corporation like the OUPC at Milton Keynes, the Television Theatre, and Lime Grove. It also has features on the 1982 Eurovision Song Contest which the BBC hosted at Harrogate, The Raising of the Rose, Children in Need (then a very different programme!). And it nods to the regions too with features on The Beechgrove Garden (Aberdeen), Pobol y Cwm (Cardiff for S4C), Asian Magazine (Birmingham), and BBC North East and Cumbria. There's even a piece about Catering!

That picture of Mike Neville was on TV-Ark but isn't acessible at the moment because of their rebuild.

Anyway, iff you're even just slightly television anroaky, it's well worth getting your hands on a copy if you ever see it in a second hand book shop! And no, mine's not for sale... Wink

Very Happy I'll have to hunt it down in the local library again, easier when you know the name you're looking for.

No Pip again for the north version...

Who covered for her again - Kim Ingils?

I still like Kim better, I don't know why she didn't get the job full time.

And is this Johnathan Morell announcing for TTTV in 1996? (I thought by this point, Aug 1996, he had left continuity.)

Phillipa THOMSON. - Is funny that some people feel the need to post when the main presenter is absent for a day or two. It's hardly as if there are sinister forces at work considering they were talking about Pip towards the end of the programme and her doing the Santa's Run thingy for charity in her high heels!

Not assuming that something 'sinister' is occuring, just making an observation that's all. I quite like her that's all and just wondered where she was, but thanks for pointing out that she was mentioned at the end of the programme, because I can now relax that dark or sinister forces weren't at work after all.

Glorious.

I remember videoing that at the time, only to find at the end that I'd left the pause button on. Truly devastating.

Ooh - lovely fluffy mix of the NET theme at the end of that trail!

I can't believe the full music package isn't knocking around somewhere on a library CD. I know it's been asked before - but anyone any ideas where I might find it? Having it would make my life complete.

Before anyone says anything, if it is library music, all I'm after is the CD number and library - I can find it from there.

Oh indeed, it's just marvellous, and how it evolved from the bizzare old triangles titles, through network north, into the compass points titles and then into the full Mike version was just fab.

One of the best versions was the lovely piano arrangement used for the short-lived 'Primetime' programme. I've got a ropey copy of that at home somewhere - must dig it out later.
