All the studios are (pretty much) identical which I'm not really a fan of. In my opinion, local news show be a little individual and separate whereas now they all look the same albeit different backgrounds.

Whereas before they were all unique? This isn't a recent development, they've had a uniform look for ten years!

Why the flat orange pillar? looks odd and out of place

The view is still in Carlisle, and is near the Castle.

Also, the Thomas Cook weather sponsorship returned today on Border.

Never been a fan of them doing the weather in front of those screens but that is much better framed than it has been on other regions.

Exactly the same issue as all the other sets though with the presenter shots - baffles me how that set has been allowed to roll out with such an obvious flaw.

Calendar just use the screen for weather photos and banter during the programme, the forecast itself comes from a CSO position.

The lighting and backdrop screens in this set seem to be much brighter than in some of the other sets, which improves it considerably. The Tyne Tees backdrop may be problematic - the Tyne Bridge currently has large Rugby World Cup signage hanging from it, so unless it's live then they'll be re-recording it at some point. Think the old backdrop was live but I may be mistaken.

The old backdrop wasn't live. A camera operator goes out every two months (approximately) and films the backdrop for around one hour at the time it will be broadcast. The backdrop is then played out as live so that the lighting changes roughly in line with a live camera. It's time consuming but the result is that the Tyne tees backdrops have always been pretty good.

What about when Daybreak V1 used to show regional footage (from what looked like most of the regional news backdrops) of sunrise? Tyne Tees one was one of those - surely it had to be live?

I'm pretty sure the old Border background loops was the same one from 9-10 years ago ha!

The Daybreak regional shots were live, which is why the idea only lasted a short period of time! A lovely idea but resource intensive and they also didn't factor in UK weather which often means sunrises aren't exactly 'stunning'.
