But isn't that pretty much what any presenter from any programme does when they anchor (as opposed to report) from any location? Although some of the programmes were more substantial, wasn't it the same on most of the news channels for the D-Day anniversaries, US elections, Soham, etc?

for much of the time, based in the Coalition media centre (which did eventually relocate to a safe-ish bit of Southern Iraq later in the conflict), tied to an autocue (or possibly paper scripts) fed from a computer in London...
To me the whole "co-present from the Middle East" issue was pure theatre - even down to the comedy (and beautifully lit) tank in the background for some of the shots.
Sure it was a nice bit of "telly" - but unless I missed something Mark was doing pretty much exactly the same as if he had been in London - reading links into other people's reports...
