Radio 4's Nick Clarke dies at 58

The presenter of BBC Radio 4's The World at One programme, Nick Clarke, has died of cancer, aged 58.
Clarke was diagnosed with cancer last year, and had to have his leg amputated during treatment.

He kept a frank and moving audio diary about his operation and chemotherapy, which was broadcast on Radio 4 in June.

BBC News head Helen Boaden said: "Nick was a superb journalist. It's hard to imagine Radio 4 or BBC journalism without him."

"He had a brilliantly forensic mind, a wry wit and a deep instinct for the power of language," she added.

Although he latterly presented on Radio, he was a Newsnight stalwart for many years and also had featured in many other television programmes such as "The Money Programme" previously.

i don't normally participate in obit threads, but i really liked Nick's style on the World at One and although Shaun Ley is great too, there was something in the way he came across which almost sound like he was in the room talking to me rather than just reading a script.

i was quite surprised to hear this though - he'd only presented any questions/answers a little while ago.

what is more stark and saddening is how much the cancer ravaged his body, there are some pictures on the bbc news website where he looks like a different person entirely.

Indeed, almost 2,000 people have taken the trouble to pay tribute at time of posting - myself included.

It's surprising how much the death of radio presenters means so much more to people that TV presenters. I'm still can't get over the fact that John Peel's no longer with us, and was really saddened to hear of Nick Clarke's death. Listening to them everyday, as if they're just talking to you, is like they're a good friend.

Shaun Ley is good, but Nick Clarke's honeyed tones will not be replaced easily. A true gent.
