I don't recall Choice and Knowledge being known as anything other than 'Choice Pres' etc. They do use NC3 and 4 a bit now I believe...

Indeed, BBC Three/CBBC always identifies now as NC3 over talkback, and BBC Four/CBeebies always identifies as NC4.

During the recent extended hours for BBC Three, CBBC was moved over to a separate position whilst BBC Three continued at NC3 - so I always identified as NC5 when doing CBBC live links/Newsround. That was pretty unofficial though Wink

Arrested Development & Bojack Horseman both do the same.

And indeed any US TV show that has an opening theme, but a different closing theme based on the ending. True Blood springs to mind.

That's fascinating. It never actually occurred to me that the start/end themes were completely different pieces of music. However, in my defence, I don't think I have a particularly musical ear, and I was rather young at the time. Very Happy

I recall that some drama series have changed to a different mix for the titles after a while, but retained the original music for the credit sequence at the end. The only one that readily springs to mind is the remake/reinvention of Prisoner: Cell Block H/Wentworth Prison, which has just changed the mix of the title sequence music for series 2: although I am sure there are more well known examples.

Are there any other programmes which have used completely different music for the start/end in the same way as the original Newsround?

Very surprised that nobody has mentioned the most obvious example and longest running. Wimbledon.

Light & Tuneful at the beginning, Sporting Occasion at the end.

Also, I think some variety-type shows did this practice a lot. The one that readily comes to mind for me is the Two Ronnies. They were very different pieces of music at the beginning and end of the shows.

Actually The Two Ronnies is one piece of music, with a rather strange middle section which was never (Aiui) used on air. I think you can find it on MHP Private Parts.

The strange middle section was never used on air, it was only composed for the public release of the Two Ronnies theme, to try to link two separate pieces of music for commercial release. If you remember the 21 years retrospective series, the opening theme didn't actually stop, as it does on the commercial release, it just kept on going with that extended trail and faded out. See this youtube video.

A similar situation applies with the library release of the Treasure Hunt theme by Zack Laurence. The seperate opening and closing themes were linked together by a specially composed middle section. But they don't count as completely different tracks, since bar a few notes, they are exactly the same.

Quote:
As for Wimbledon, I believe the two pieces were chosen because Light and Tuneful doesn't have a particularly strong ending (or at least it didn't in the producer's opinion at the time) and Sporting Occasion doesn't have a great beginning.

Certainly not wrong on the Light & Tuneful count. Sporting Occasion on the other hand, was a typical newsreel piece back in the day, and was designed to be used in its entireity. I think it was only used because Light & Tuneful's ending was completely unsuitable.

By a similar token, the opening of Johnny One Note, is very "newsy", but the rest of the piece far less so. John Baker's radiophonic composition, had a nice succint ending in keeping with the "And Finally..." stories that they did at the end of Newsround back then, so it fitted nicely there. But the rest of the piece has little about it to fit in with Newsround.

The "strange middle section" was very much used on air - it's the theme tune to "Death Can Be Fatal", one of the Piggy Malone multi-episode serials that each series had.

By a similar token, the opening of Johnny One Note, is very "newsy", but the rest of the piece far less so.

The other thing about Johnny One Note, of course, is that it has the word "John" in it. I wonder if they chose it when they had Jonathan Dimbleby scheduled to be the presenter, who was their original choice, and when he pulled out they specifically tried to find another person called John.

This is going off the point a bit but Ready Steady Cook used to have two opening themes, they had the parpy one over the opening titles with the dancing tomatoes and then when Fern/Ainsley worked on the set they had a totally different race-against-time-esque theme.

There's only three bulletins a day now: 7.40, 8.15, 16.05 (during holidays) or 16.20 (term time).

They first dropped the 18.50 bulletin on a Friday then later dropped it all together.

And the reason why it is still showing as on air at 18.50 on the website is because that page is years old. It was updated on 25th September with the new channel for CBBC Freeview.

Yes, spending money on a new set and graphics package is a sure sign it's heading for the axe, obviously.
