The main Newsround programme came from a BBC News studio right until the move to Salford.

It may have often had its own set, but it used TC7 for many years until the move up North, as well as other News studios before that.

The CBBC digital bulletins came first from the CBBC pres operation in TC2, then from a small mini-studio in East Tower.

I love the new look. It looks modern and up to date!
Newsround's always been one of the best children's programmes that is on BBC Television.

The ending notes are familiar, was that from a previous version??

Yes, the end of the track is based on the original outro music from John Craven's Newsround - John Baker's "New Worlds".

Listen here at 0:36sec (the whole piece is rather lovely)

The original start of John Craven's Newsround was an entirely different piece of music called "Johnny one note" (which I appear not to be able to embed, but you can listen to it here):

That's fascinating. It never actually occurred to me that the start/end themes were completely different pieces of music. However, in my defence, I don't think I have a particularly musical ear, and I was rather young at the time. Very Happy

I recall that some drama series have changed to a different mix for the titles after a while, but retained the original music for the credit sequence at the end. The only one that readily springs to mind is the remake/reinvention of Prisoner: Cell Block H/Wentworth Prison, which has just changed the mix of the title sequence music for series 2: although I am sure there are more well known examples.

Are there any other programmes which have used completely different music for the start/end in the same way as the original Newsround?

NC8 would have been a presentation suite wouldn't it? N1, N2 and N3 were the news studios in that era.

There's never been an NC8. NC1 and 2 for BBC one and BBC two presentation. There was a spare control room which was sometimes known as NC3 in the manual control days but this name dropped out of use when the NTA opened, where instead there were three identical control rooms which could be configured to be NC1, 2 and spare as required. These control rooms were actually called red, green and blue control rooms. When digital telly started, there was DNC1 and DNC2. I don't recall Choice and Knowledge being known as anything other than 'Choice Pres' etc. They do use NC3 and 4 a bit now I believe...

For the news studios, and I think this is all correct (someone will, I am sure, confirm anything I've misremembered) there was an N1, N2, N3 and N5 (N4 was a euphemism for the club). N6 replaced N2 as the domestic news studio and later became the home to the news channel until TVC closed. There was no N7 because news by then were using TC7 and this was seen as a potential source of confusion. N8 and N9 were the newsroom sets in Stage VI and V respectively. N10 was the 'clip studio' for daytime summaries.

Only Fools and Horses is the only one that immediately springs to mind but there must be others.

Great British Bake Off? There's a hint of a shared motif, but the opening and closing themes are pretty dissimilar.

Very surprised that nobody has mentioned the most obvious example and longest running. Wimbledon.

Light & Tuneful at the beginning, Sporting Occasion at the end.

Also, I think some variety-type shows did this practice a lot. The one that readily comes to mind for me is the Two Ronnies. They were very different pieces of music at the beginning and end of the shows.

I wasn't suggesting that there was an NC8, just that had there been something with that name, the naming convention would have been for a pres area rather than a news studio.

Actually The Two Ronnies is one piece of music, with a rather strange middle section which was never (Aiui) used on air. I think you can find it on MHP Private Parts.

As for Wimbledon, I believe the two pieces were chosen because Light and Tuneful doesn't have a particularly strong ending (or at least it didn't in the producer's opinion at the time) and Sporting Occasion doesn't have a great beginning.
