I'm sorry but Newsround is a disgrace and needs to be completely overhauled.

It's no longer news focused but it's turning into some sort of strange programme with silly items, and acting as a counselling session in response to news, rather than just bringing the kids the news of the day. The programme talks down to them, and many of the items are not classed as news.

I'm not in the demographic but even I can see many items are not news, and what news there is only gets a few seconds... Where did it all go wrong?

I can point to this from Last Monday https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5iljaZj77k&t=159

Is that news? Also on Monday there said how Pewdiepie was a bad man and he said a bad word, but only highlight the reaction to what he said, not saying or even given a hint what it actually related to.

I just think the BBC should be doing a better job, and Newsround should not be used to cover non news content, that should be for other programmes. I really hope it's not just me seeing how bad it's become.

Emoji's may not be news to us, but they're a part of a modern day child's day to day life.

NR still puts out important news to children in an accessible manner, although it may not be as instant as we expect it on the adult news bulletins.

compare it to newsround from the 80s or even 90s and there is a clear difference.

Yes, but the way children consumed television was a lot different to now. They also have access to 'real' news on the NR website as well as other sources.

Turning NR into Junior BBC News isn't the way to approach children in 2017.

Maybe it's to do with the demographics shift with CBBC in the mid noughties? This is my era, but they were aiming CBBC programmes up to 14years old. (now it's down to 12)

EDIT:

2007, top story about a school shooting in the USA.

Much less patronising/sensitive.

But that piece on emojis adds absolutely nothing to the understanding of emojis held by many children, is certainly not anything new or newly discovered and as far as I can tell wasn't even topical to anything outside the programme. It is a bit like playing a report on how the UK voting system works when no general election is on the cards, yes its factual information that people should know but it isn't news.

In that case, let's go back to the noughties when there were endless Harry Potter VT's being pumped out. Not necessarily what we'd consider news, but again, part of children's lives.

Also note that CBBC's service licence (from 2007) states that NR is a magazine programme. This like the regional news services allows flexibility on what they actually put into the running order, which would allow for fluffy packages such as Potter and emojis.

So most children watching are fully aware of all the different cultural interpretations of emojis mentioned in that piece?

I'm not sure it's fair to compare the first edition of the day on CBBC to the longer-form main bulletin (either of the past or now). The Newsround Lite video above, for example, was a Showbiz bulletin - hardly comparable to the main programme.

It's very hard to objectively judge this stuff when you are so much older than the target audience.

Despite the criticism on here, Newsround led with the Parsons Green explosion today with photo captions on the monitor behind the presenter. Was very brief, but did the job.

Just like with Blue Peter, if Newsround ever ends it will be a very sad day.

Also, I believe the endless Harry Potter VTs were pumped out at a time when Ellie Crisell was presenting. And unless I'm very much mistaken (copyright Murray Walker), isn't she reasonably popular on this forum? Wink
