Thats probably why he's on Tonight for two minutes. One at the start for introducing the programme, and one at the end for saying 'goodbye and thankyou for joining us'. At least he isn't on the ITV News at 10:30, but Mark Austin isn't any better than him! He's okay on the Evening News but not Nightly.

Yeah I dont mind Mark on the Evening News but it would be nice if someone else got the chance to do the late news like James or Geraint.

It seems to me just from reading this thread that none of you like any of the newsreaders, these days.
I know I'm only some stupid little 16 year old who's opinion no one could give a toss about but they've gotten where they are somehow! Surely this is because they are good at what they do. The vast majority of the population could not do their job, which requires intelligence, being able to deal with breaking news while still remaining cool, confidence, professionalism, being a good interviewer.

It amazes me how people can have such a negative view of someone without even knowing the person in question.

I know I'm going to get completely shouted down now. I don't care. It's just my opinion after all.

Oh, and to the immensely clever person who claimed Natasha Kaplinsky had cotton wool for brains ... well, I didn't realise they let such people into Oxford University.

'Kate Silverton - Bitch' Hmm. Well, I would beg to differ, I think she's very talented at what she does, but I know my opinions of her would be laughed at so I won't ...

Well put Vikki, and I completely agree - it's a very hard job being a newsreader, and some of the best have come out of recent days.

Dont get me started.

I suppose only a genius would shove a hamster in a mailbox, or jump in to a shallow river and break both of their legs (both news stories featuring Oxford students from the last year).

I turned down a postgrad offer from Oxford because I couldn't stand working with all of the idiotic undergraduates and the ridiculous number of 'fasci-liberals' there.

By 'fasci-liberals' I mean those who claim to defend human rights etc. etc. and then demand that a member of staff who is a member of 'migration watch', denying him a right to freedom of speech. Yet they support muslims who express the desire to blow the **** out of London.

Idiots.

Actually, I think the problem is that many are not chosen for being good at reading the news, but for being good journalists, which is a different thing entirely. Sometimes this can work, but very often it doesn't. A great example from the past was ITN's Michael 'cross flannel cherries' Nicholson, a fine foreign and war correspondent who was clearly uncomfortable reading an autocue in a studio with people talking in his ear.

As for Sir Trevor, he was a fine newsreader once upon a time but seems to have become a victim of his own celebrity. Watch a clip from his heyday News at Ten years and compare with his current style and you'll see that he's become an unconscious self-parody, as though he's doing an impression of Jon Culshaw 'doing' him.

I know one - Jackie Bird (Reporting Scotland). She's just plain annoying and I can't believe that the Beeb keep making her present our (Scottish) versions of Children in Need, etc, etc.

Victoria Hollins is awful on BBC London, she just often doesnt seem to understand things or care. I think she's bringing the London team down. But on the other hand Riz, Asad, Louisa and Matt are all very good!
