I haven't seen overnights in ages - who currently does them?

Either Big Al, Martine Croxall or Karin Giannone though, unfortunately, it's usually Martine.

Alistair is a true professional and seems to be a jolly nice chap too... he sometimes say Ciao when signing off which is different Smile

Anyone remember Gillian Ni Cheallaigh - she was fab... what has happened to her?

Matthew Amroliwala - loves himself too much

I agree with several of the people on your list, but wanted to draw particular attention to Matthew Armadillo.

On the morning of the July 7th London Underground bombings, a "head of the Fire Service" type person was interviewed on BBC News 24, by Armadillo. It was cringemaking. The line of questioning was insensitive - more interested in statistics (e.g. "how may confirmed fatalities so far?" etc) than the gravity of the situation. Granted, the questions may have been being dictated by a producer in Matthew's earpiece, but nevertheless they were being asked in a pushy and insensitive way, which made it seem as if Matthew didn't care about the tragedy. He seemed oblivious to how wound-up and annoyed the Fire Chief was clearly getting with the line of questioning.

I never really had any opinion, good or bad, of Matthew at all before then. But now, after that abysmal display, I really think he's quite a poor newscaster.

As a straighforward, no nonsense news "reader", I have to list Moira Stuart (Surprise, Surprise) as my preferred one.

On the other hand, I haven't been all that impressed with Mary Nightingale, as I find her voice to be too "nervy". However, as a journalist and presenter, she is excellent. It's just the voice that niggles me slightly.

(By the way - entirely off topic, I can't beleive how fabulous Moira is looking in the new BBC promo shots. She hasn't aged one bit and looks remarkably youthful.

Entirely, entirely, entirely off topic and not news related (but I want to share it with you all, my chums), log onto www.wikipedia.org and do a search for Tina Turner. Can you believe her new look for 2007?????? What an amazing lady and what an amazing new look. Timeless classic.......)

Back to news readers who ain't that good - don't like the nasality of jake Lynch all that much either.

Ciao.

Hasn't she got some sort of condition where her voice can go at any moment? I'm sure I read it somewhere - and it adds a bit of danger to the news!

I have to say Peter Sissons is the most useless newsreader ever!

He constantly stumbles over his words and seems to me doesn't care. I have watched him on BBC News24 on weekends and I can see why the BBC decided to put him on then, so know one will see him make the usual mistakes which a professional newsreader of his experience should never make.

I do not think he has got over the Death of the Queen Mother incident on BBC News. It was the start of his verbal downfall.

Just some of my other former favourite BBC newsreaders:

- Sue Lawley (in particular when the lesbians invaded the studio)
- Nicholas Witchell
- Richard Baker
- Robert Dougall
- Jan Leeming (for pure gorgeousness!)
- Angela Rippon
- Michael Buerk
- Peter Sissons, before he moved to News 24

The current lot (Huw Edwards, Fiona Bruce, Natasha Kaplinsky, George Alagiah, Sophie Raworth, Emily Maitlis, Mishal Husain etc) are crap in comparison

I have been in a newsreading situation before (albeit not with a major news corp) and know what it is like to read the news when an irritating man is jabbering in your ear....

She was on BBC WORLD this morning and pronounced Bangladesh as Baarrngledayish. It took me by surprise and it took me several seconds to work out which country she was talking about!
