For some reason, the 1990s mix of the Newsnight theme tune was used over the credits tonight as a tribute to Arthur C Clarke was played.

Weird.

Bit random, but Tuesday's Newsnight was anchored by Jeremy Paxman in Crewe, and Liz MacKean in London.

It's quite rare that they have to resort to getting reporters to present the programme?

Liz MacKean isn't a stranger to presenting, she used to present Breakfast News

I think I recall Liz presenting the programme before, but I maybe mistaken.

Yep - Liz was a reasonably regular Breakfast News presenter in the late 90s era. I think she was after it left the "virtual" blue studio shared with the One, Six and Nine, but before it rebranded as "Breakfast" in 2000.

She has also presented Newsnight many times.

Ah fair enough, I don't remember seeing her before, but I've only recently started watching Newsnight regularily.

Interesting that they used the sofa (and it was the Review version of the sofa at that) for most of the programme last night right from the start...with Kirsty doing most of the news from there...only the last item was desk bound...was actually quite a nice change. Though maybe there were some problems....no closing sweeping shot, rather a quick wide shot of the desk before the end sting.

The sound in tonight's Newsnight is awful. I don't think they've managed to go to one guest where they've managed to catch the beginning of their answer/comment...Seem to be having to use the boom mike for everyone even although most guests appear to be wearing radio mics. I know it's an OB but fooking hell. Painful to watch
