Well done to Newsnight - the only programme today that I've seen where you'd never know anything had happened, and they had the set to themselves for just 5 minutes before going on air.

Not exactey they now have a desk light which looks a bit out of place as it is bright purple when previosly they had no desk lights

yes, very good - they had the shortest time to prepare but you couldn't notice anything different!

But unlike other programmes, they hadn't moved studios, so there was never really going to be anything different.

I missed this but apparently Paxman held up his hand during a discussion, held it to a halt and said something to the effect of: "Hang on a minute. Viewers in Scotland". At which point we cut away. Is that correct?

Nice comedy moment if it happened.

No nothing different at all - they're quite used to having the UK's most watched main national news bulletin occupying their studio until minutes before they go to air! Rolling Eyes

What difference does the number of viewers make? I think he means that the Newsnight production team is used to working in TC7 all year long so they're in familiar surroundings. Regardless of the amount of time available before the programme, everything else stays pretty much the same.

And why are people making such a big deal about the short turn-around between the Ten and Newsnight? ITN have had that situation since 2005 with Channel 4 News and More4 News....

I meant there was never going to be anything different noticeable to the viewer - unlike the bulletins which had moved studios. Unless that is, you were expecting to see Fiona Bruce trotting off in the background or Jeremy Paxman bounding onto the set at the last minute.

And there used to be a 30 second turnaround between the Six and UK Today in the days when they shared the same studio - with just a trail between broadcasts...

I enjoyed seeing that time-lapse footage of the studio being turned around between those two shows. Think that was on the C4 news website. Very interesting.

I heard that, I didn't quite see it, but I looked at the clock and it said 1100 so realised that Scotland were opting out. A separate Newsnight Scotland is a lovely idea but how do you suddenly interrupt a free flowing debate, which is what Newsnight is about to make a smooth opt for Scotland.

He interrupted a guest mid sentence, turned to the camera and said something like "Viewers in Scotland leave us now because you're going to talk about something else." Turned back to the guest and said something along the lines of "So sorry, do finish the point."

Really made it clear that he doesn't like the Scotland opt-out!

Well good for his xenophobic self!

Why he has a problem with Newsnight Scotland I don't know - is he really that desperate for the minority of viewers from Scotland to hear his voice for the WHOLE programme.

Personally, I do like Newsnight Scotland as it provides an in-depth look at Scottish stories that we could never expect from a London-centric programme such as Newsnight itself. This isn't being parochial, but once they have excellently covered the World News aspects, I wouldn't then want to hear about the lastest NHS crisis in England & Wales, for example, as it has no interest/impact on me.
