If it was a major enough story though they could just delay the start of Newsnight by 5 or 10 minutes.

That screws everything up though - and if a big story breaks Newsnight viewers will expect Newsnight to be there at 10.33pm on the dot!

Laughing Laughing And it's ITV who are accused of News at When, eh?

What's BBC2 meant to do? Twiddle their thumbs Play the potters wheel?

In the case of a very important story then they could simulcast with News 24 as a "News Special" after 22:30. This could be announced before the opt-out to the regions. It could then return with Huw Edwards in N8. That way Newsnight wouldn't be affected at all.

That's a complete farce though!

Only way they'll get around it really is to have the 10pm broadcast on-location, so they don't need the studio - but that's not really something the bulletin is known for (unlike ITV News) - and it would be pretty obvious they're only out in the cold as they can't use the studio.

Perhaps a "fudge" but not necessarily a farce. Such a measure would only be required over the next few months while these upgrades/moves are going on. The eventuality of something *that* big happening isn't very likely.

Surely after all the moves, any news special would be a simulcast on BBC One and News 24, but using whatever set/background they end up with for the Ten in N6.

If a story was that important that they wanted to run an extended version of the Ten O Clock News, it could be presented from News24 studio. Huw is used to the studio, and it wouldn't be that difficult.

It doesn't look very professional though if they either change studio midway through or host from the News 24 studio throughout.

That throws up problems of it's own in what News 24 does in the hour or so before the Ten goes on air.

News 24 does exactly what it does in the hour before the One goes on air. Runs as normal. They have managed in the past with it, they could manage now, and we all know they will in the future.

Yes it may look slightly odd but if it was throughout the programme it would be fine. I'm sure Fiona has at the last minute due to a technical problem.

Well done to Newsnight - the only programme today that I've seen where you'd never know anything had happened, and they had the set to themselves for just 5 minutes before going on air.

yes, very good - they had the shortest time to prepare but you couldn't notice anything different!

I know North West Tonight did do as a few years ago it rewound live on air!

How embarassing Rolling Eyes How did they explain that away in the programme, or did they just ignore it?

The BBC only tend to pre-record sequences when they are particularly complicated and thus the chances of error are greater. In this case, though, I don't know the reason.

I recall one time (I think 2003) when BBC1 NW were playing the Acrobats ident to the then theme tune of North West Tonight and it rewound half way on air, so that really left them in a mess. Although there were several occassions when VT's couldn't play due them being jammed in the machine, so often Gordon Burns would have apologise and bluff with Dianne Oxberry for 3 minutes straight.

Lol yes, that was NWT in years gone by. They've been a lot better recently. On that particular occasion, I can't remember what Gordon said. It must be going back to c.2001. He probably just blamed it on 'technical problems' like usual and carried on regardless!
