Tonight's Newsnight ended with the usual end credit roller, but in place of the normal signature tune we had the theme from Jaws. The end board then had a bite taken out of it.

I watched the programme from start to finish, but for the life of me I can't work out why they ended the programme in such an odd way.

Anybody know why? Is this some political reference or other? Or perhaps an odd way of showing resistance to the planned job cuts at the beeb?

Channel 4 News ran a report on it at the end of tonight's programme. They had one of their reporters stopping staff outside Television Centre and asking them what they thought of the incident.

LOL - On C4 News Lynsey was saying to BBC staff who wouldn't give a response to the incident - ' I'm only trying to get my teeth into the story ' !!!!

A few weeks ago Newsnight ended with the presenter not being in the chair, it was supposed to be spooky, so we had the usual closing shot and music, and the lights dimmed with nobody sitting at the desk.

Newsnight did something similar following a package about the new Doctor Who series a couple of weeks ago. At the very end of the show, it cut to the overhead shot, Jeremy Paxman started to log out of the computer and play with papers as he often does, and then he disappeared in the style of the Tardis, with accompanying sound effects. Seamlessly, the camera then pulled back as normal, as the titles and standard long end titles played out.

Good harmless fun.
