World News Today dropped on World, in favor of a BBC News special with Clive Myrie, Carole Walker and Chris Eakin.

Just been flicking through my EPG - Sky, BBC, CNNi, Euronews, Russia Today and France 24 all leading with the NOTW closure.

Just heard on Sky News that the NOTW will run without adverts for its final edition, and also donate all sales revenue to charity.

Looks like I may have to be up early on Sunday to buy a copy as a souvenir.

Fionualla with a news special on CNN International, linking in with the excellent Dan Rivers in London. (is he former ITN?)

He is very much on top of events. Incredible global coverage of this story.

Murdoch has been very clever both with the closure and the Sky News coverage to distance News International from NOTW. He will sadly come out of this completely unscathed. But hopefully the Sky takeover won't be allowed alongside owning Sky News in light of all of this.

In an earlier post someone suggested that it could be the incentive to close down Sky News, but I doubt it. At the very most it will have a knock on effect on The Sun, not just because the two papers are so closely linked but because The Sun will inevitably directly replace NOTW. However there was someone on the news earlier who works in a newsagents and said sales of The Sun have been down with The Mirror selling out of copies.

Can I just ask, it may sound naive of me, but why is this of global interest?

Exactly what I was thinking! I can understand that it should be included in the international news, as it relates to News Corp and things they have done wrong. But surely there are many bigger international stories that are more interesting and relevant to international viewers such as the conflicts in the Arab states at the moment and the Portuguese/Greek money problems. It's like us seeing major coverage of the closure a newspaper in France - should be included in the news but only one story, not major coverage.

So, do you think Murdoch is directly involved in controlling the Sky News coverage of this story? Jeez.

The Global interest is that Murdoch is basically the only Multimedia News Baron. News International have their fingers in so many publications and broadcasting enterprises. Hence the attraction (and attrition) of all media players in the story.

Well given that the Sunday Sun already exists I hope NCJ Media are getting their lawyers on the ready.

I for one will be decidedly unhappy at a long-established regional product being forced off the shelves by that cnut Murdoch...

Of course if The Mirror want to be really naughty they'll use the trademark and get a national "Sunday Sun" out for a few weeks when News International decide to release their "Sun on Sunday" or whatever.

Apparently Murdoch tried to buy the Sunday Sun name years ago but got turned down. The domain registered was thesunonsunday.co.uk

Yeah Sky well ahead of BBC on this one.

Well of course, it would be a shock if they weren't.

The '2 source' thing has meant that the BBC has been slower at reporting events - they haven't been doing the 'Financial Times says:' style thing

Not directly but Sky News will have been advised on what angle to take. Its damage limitation. Depending on what angle the wider media take, it could affect the entire of News International but they've handled it extremely well.
