I just wish they kept things consistent and had News at Ten.

Things seem to be very consistent to me. News at Ten four nights a week and The Late News on a Friday. Very straightforward. You might not like it, but it is consistent.

I watched it on the first day just to see if Mcdonut was as crap as he always was ... I didn't have to wait too long and then I switched over.
If anyone doesn't know the news of the day by 10pm they're a brain-dead moron.

Either that or very busy with their lives doing interesting things and earning a living.

News at Ten is about as outdated as the red socks of the t****r who re-instated the programme.
Joe Punter has spoke and he has voted with the off button.

Of course he has. Shocked

I mean ... do you really believe Bill Neely went live from 60 feet under the Antartic ?

And what would you know about broadcasting live from anywhere? What can you prove?

Whatever you say showbizguru i know for a FACT that Bill did his live piece from 60ft under the ice on Monday night. A sat link on the surface and cabling down into the glacier. In my 30 years in the biz it still impressed the hell out of me and i'm an old cynic!

I think it was good they kept in line with NaT style rather than the awful ITV fake walkway look. Wink

Okie dokie - simple question.
Why was there no live strap ?

Surely with CGI graphics it can't be that difficult to create an 11pm version.

That's what I'd have thought too. But then again, it looks like they're being less strict about the bulletin starting bang on the hour like N@10 does, so perhaps they didn't want a Big Ben clock face showing 11pm when it's actually 11:03pm etc?

I suppose this also allows the Friday "Late News" to potentially have any start time from, say, 10:30pm onwards if necessary (depending on the rest of the evening's schedule), without them having to make umpteen different versions of the CGI big ben, showing various different times on its clock face?

We all remember how half-ars*d the supposed "return" of N@10 was last time round (2002-ish?), with it actually being on at 10:30pm etc half the flippin' time. The non time-specific titles we saw last night seem like they could potentially allow for Mon-Thu to once again lapse into "News at When?" bad habits... Confused

Correct me if I'm wrong but during the similar opening titles during the early 90s, wasn't the clock adaptable so they could make changes to the minute hand if need be.

Unless the presenters are talking to the studio in some way, reports are not live.

It was a live two-way.

Did you actually watch News at Ten on Monday night? There was most definitely a live strap!

Yep, I've seen versions of that, and earlier titles, with other start times such as 10:04.

If The Late News isn't going to be fixed at 11pm, why use the XI branding?

The one element of the News at When situation back in 2001-2004 that worked was the Friday late edition because it was linked in with the Weekend News, which at the time was a much stronger brand than it is now.

If the Friday edition was part of a plan to revitalise the Weekend News again it might work this time around with the later start time, but it's all a bit of a mess really - and looking at ITV's schedule as a whole this time around it seems having News at Ten on a Friday wouldn't be too much of a problem, with the simple solution being to shift Al Murray to Saturday and the Saturday movie to Friday.
