A great News at Ten tonight - providing far more information about the plane crash and a good mix of other stories too - indeed, the BBC had finished reporting the crash whereas News at Ten were still providing up to the minute reporting on tonight's programme. There was even a background graphic of Diana over Trevor's shoulder and less stings and cutaways during tonight's programme. It also finished around 10.27pm.
So all in all, the best News at Ten so far. Much better than the BBC's offering, of course!

ITN did a terrific job of covering the Heathrow story tonight in my opinion. On the Beeb, George stood for the opening link (Why? Get behind the desk for goodness sake...) in front of live pictures from the perimeter fence of the 'stricken plane'. Clichés aplenty and actually there were two VTs

they went live to the scene. By 2209 it was onto other news. I then switched to News At Ten and was far more drawn in to their coverage. Co-Presenting the programme with Julia on the scene and Sir Trev in the studio worked so much better. The story ran for another five or six minutes but didn't feel stretched. That said, ITN did have a VT where a reporter talked to an 'aviation expert' on a two-shot in front of a large plasma/lcd screen trying to work out what happened. They might have been able to have seen the footage they were analysing, we the viewers couldn't see a damn thing on the screen! Not so good,...
Even the BBC's Six o'Clock news' coverage of the Heathrow story felt like it could have happened yesterday. I bet there's a bit of regret about ditching the two presenter format. They'd have certainly co-presented that bulletin had this story happened a few months ago.

Sorry to correct you, but in 1991 when John Macarthey was released, Trevor presented a special News At Ten live from the Airport. ready for his arrival.
I think it was 1991 anyway, the programme may even have been extended too.

Can anyone provide a video of the opening - it be interesting to see how they dealt with the OB situation. I doubt the old News at Ten ever really had presenters on location.
Also how nice was that "In Depth" graphic with the gold clockface?

They spent a few minutes at the top of the Lunchtime with live pictures, and then spoke to their reporter at the end of the programme. What would be the point in sticking with it if they don't know what's going on, and can't get any other news on it at that point?

Shame that ITN practically ignored the story at Lunchtime whilst the BBC coverage on the One O clock news as the story broke was superb.

Questionable today starting with the all youths are murderers story - and then an interview with an ex-Bad Lads Army bloke, before going to the main breaking news of the day - which had broken well in advance of going to air to give them time to start with it.

Why on earth would you assume that?

I assume this will be the one and only week Trevor does all four nights of the News at Ten.

Right. You obviously missed the large amount of coverage it got in the national press (both ads and features) over last weekend and the begining of this week?

Not really - the ITV News website is crap and hasn't got anywhere near the reputation of the BBC, and really apart from a few people here and at ITN, the return of News at Ten has hardly captured the publics imagination.
And most discussion of News at Ten's return has been away from the ITV website at places like MediaGuardian - and here in fact.

Why on earth would you assume that?
A. It''s Trevor McDonald - he hasn't worked more than a 3-day week since 1986.
B. They've got to keep Mark sweet by giving him at least one News at Ten a week.
Presumably Mark is doing the late news tomorrow - has he done the Evening News all week too?

Funny how trends and fashions come and go in news. Four years ago ITV News seemed to get a lot of grief for "standing up news" and now even the BBC do it for no particular reason whatsoever. Some of their correspondent studio spots with wall graphics behind them are so clichéd it's untrue. Very The Day Today .
