I've just rewatched the new titles and does anyone else think they should cut down the drum beats before the first bong? In the old NAT era, it used to go 'DUM DUM, DUM DUM, BONG' - but now they've added in another 'DUM DUM'. It just feels a bit over-the-top. They should definitely return to the old method.

What does everyone think?

I added this video a few pages back of how I think the titles should end..

I don't think it should be quite that drastic - the drums before the bong add some power and authority to the titles/headlines but I just think it should just be shortened to what it was like pre-1999.

Ellie Crissell just told us that on tonights Ten O' Clock News there going undercover in a European country to uncover how disabled children are locked and tied to beds in hostels. If you remember, ITV News ran something exactley the same last year. I can't believe how the BBC are practically copying off them.

It's normally ITV who does all of the copying!

I just noticed that, im sure it was Chris Rogers who did the report last year, or was it, im also sure NBC Today's Anne Curry also went to visit some place like this.

It was Chris Rogers. And it was a series of reports if I'm not mistaken.

Yes, you're right - it was Chris Rogers. It is rather surprising that the BBC is copying all of ITV's news specials.

They are even using the 90 second update to promote the Ten O'Clock News? Rolling Eyes

God - I was hoping News at Ten's revival might make them think about letting Huw do the summary as an extended promo for the 10.

Re: The eye's vid - much better, that beat really irritates, especially on the studio sweep after the headlines.

BTW, anyone fancy humouring me by putting the current "ITV News" music to the new News at Ten titles...

Just thought I'd add my thoughts to the ehole thing now I've festered for pratically 24hrs.

I REALLY like the titles, the way it slows around the Thames works really well IMO.

The music less so TBH. It's OK and the majority of the public won't notice the difference but I thought it would have been nice tp have real instruments. The beat before the headlines whilst we're watching Big Ben is a bit too long for my liking, I think some of the tension is lost.

Julie was really very good - she did what she was supposed to do. I dunno whether it was the nerves or not but she seemed very 'average', a great move I think as many viewers will have just tuned in for Trev and the sheer fact that it was back. I think to have been too strong would have just been wrong.

Content, they seemed to cover less stories than the beeb but it went alot quicker. Somebody commented that the stings came a bit thick and fast - yes, this was my initial thought too. When I watched the bulletin back however, they seemed to be very much strategically placed rather than just done for the sake of it.

Another bone to pick is when they did the coming up sequence too and the camera pulled away from the desk. That seemed very much a 'going to break, back soon' type of shot. I would simply do it the other way round.

A poster commented about Julie not putting emphasis in on the headlines. That's what comes of working on a newschannel I guess, I think in time we'll see her build up her own style a bit.

All in all I will be watching tonight, and see how good the content is. I'll go on from there.

PS - The Stings. Are they recorded? Afterall we've had recorded endings etc on most of ITV News now for a while so does this mean they're paying more for a camera operator now or have I got it wrong?

I wonder what News at Ten will be leading on tonight? It looks as though the BBC will have the flooding as their headline - I hope it's the same on NaT - surely they wouldn't have Diana again?!

News at Ten is leading on Northern Rock. Interestingly, Huw Edwards did a trailer for the Ten - with a top story about nationalising Northern Rock.

Hmm...
