That popular misconception again...

I knew that already. But thank you anyway.

Wikipedia: Clock Tower, Palace of Westminster

Words are defined by the way they are used. Even in Britain “Big Ben” more frequently refers to the clock and tower than to the bell. Those who insist that this usage is a mistake may be seen as pedantic.

Yes because everyone knows that the tower is called St. Christopher's but does anyone know exactly which bell is called Big Ben?

It is the biggest one of course!

As I said before, Sir Trevor did a fantastic job considering he hasn't 'done it' in a long time. Not only are there mulitudes of cameras now but there is an invisible screen to look at!

After seeing the astons again I think they look cheap, a boring diagonal wipe and fade out as well as them being plain navy. It is hard to see details on a 21'' 4:3 television!

And there weren't when he was last there?

'Big Ben' is only a nickname for the bell, it's not official and never has been. So why aren't we allowed to nickname the tower 'Big Ben' if we want to as well? Wink

The opening credits to the show again highlights ITVs focus towards London and retreat from the regions. There's more to the UK than the River Thames, London Eye and Big Ben. Living in North West I feel excluded, goodness knows what people in Scotland must think.

I don't understand this kind of self-victimisation. London is our capital city, and Big Ben (the best known clock in the country that we time a lot of events by) has been News At Ten's symbol for decades, so it's hardly a retreat. Also ITV are based in London. The actual news content is about the entire UK and the world as well, so I don't see the problem.

Personally I think Scotland is more like a region of the UK in terms of population (I know it's a country in it's own right) so it should be treated as every other local reigion in terms of national news. There are more people living in London than Scotland for example. In other large counties in England there are the same number of people as Scotland. Wales has the same amount of people as Scotland but they never complain, mainly because the population is 3 million odd and nothing ever happens there. Same applies to Scotland.

Yeah how the hell can Big Ben and the Eye "offend" those who live elsewhere?! It's our capital city for pete's sake! Twisted Evil

Now that N@10 is the only ITV national news bulletin to have a different look to all the others (and the serious/"dramatic" style of that look), it rather makes it feel as if it's kind of trying to be ITV's "Newsnight".

I actually thought that myself, and thought that it would be a good idea for it to be treated as such by ITV.

On that note NaT's return has helped BBC Newsnight in the ratings. Last night's audience was 1.3million (10%) It's normally around 0.9 - 1million.

Oh another ratings related point. If you exclude the ITV Regional programmes News at Ten scored 4.1million. So not too far behind the BBC (4.9), although with the amount of hype and advertising ITV created we could have expected a closer finish on the night.

I've just rewatched the new titles and does anyone else think they should cut down the drum beats before the first bong? In the old NAT era, it used to go 'DUM DUM, DUM DUM, BONG' - but now they've added in another 'DUM DUM'. It just feels a bit over-the-top. They should definitely return to the old method.

What does everyone think?

No - it's the official name and has been since it was cast. It was traditional to name large bells - such as Great Tom and Great Paul at St. Paul's Cathedral - and the parliamentary debate at which the bell was named Big Ben is minuted in Hansard. It was a back-bencher who shouted out "Why not call it Big Ben?", the name being in popular culture through a well-known prizefighter Benjamin Caunt. It was actually more likely a swipe at the then Commisioner of Works, Sir Benjamin Hall, who was of ample proportions and called (at least behind his back) Big Ben by other MPs.

I've never heard of the tower being called St. Christopher's though. It was, and is, officially known as the Clock Tower.

However, I agree that pedantry serves no purpose, and as 'The Great Westminster Clock' (the official name) is a bit of a mouthful, I think everyone's quite happy for the whole structure to be called Big Ben. Those involved with it on a daily basis usually call it that.

Yawn! I'm tired of reading all the rubbish about Big Ben and the clock tower over the last couple of pages. Most of us here are bright enough to know that already, so lets move on then.

So, how long do we think News at Ten will last this time then?

It won't be moved again, there is no reason for it to do so that hasn't already tried and failed
