ITV want a 'classic' news show to appeal to viewers who the research said were fed up with perching, walking, talking, simpering and superficial twoways. It's the anti kaplinski.

They wanted a show that was familier but would not look out of place in 2008.

That is what they got.

I really dont understand how anyone can bitch about the rendering of big ben, when a swooping flyby of a perfically lit river thames is not exactly a natural point of view.. Not right for you? why? the chances are your expecting a certain 'look' for news titles and that itself makes your preconceptions a cliche.

You should watch it, and in context ,to offer a valid opinion.

It looks like ITN and feels familier: Job done.

In a 200+ channel age faces like Trevor may look out of place, but he's got the recognition factor for channel hoppers. Huw Edwards at 10 doing a (pointless) 2way a dreary enviroment reporter then a party line report from Nick Robinson is a massive switch off for viewers in places like the North West, North East and Yorkshire - flip to cosy old trevor and some new girl (on sky her average audience was in the tens of thousands rather than millions) bingo. ratings.

The virtual set is impressive - and having been spending far to much with time orad, brainstorm and rtsw demos I have seen alot of so-so examples - and Mr Smith and Mrs Patel at home would not be able to tell you the BBC use a real wall and ITV a green screen.

Shame it launched on such a dull news day - even channel 4 news was struggling a bit last night.

Spot on with Nick Robinson, he's so far up David Cameron's arse it's unbelieveable!

On other notes, News at Ten was great last night, no adverts gave a full 25 minutes of news, just a pity it was such a slow news day.

And finally, Julie Etchingham has gone up in my estimation. BBC Five was moaning about it yesterday, they're worried.

Great start for the News at Ten! It was only let down by the overly-long reports, constant stings and Julie trying to interupt her interviewer! I though Trevor was great.

The titles were OK but I don't like the way it slows down after the 'clouds' and before the London Eye.

What had the average ratings for the 10.30 been like in recent weeks?

Between 1.5 and 2.5 million.

OK - so if News at Ten can attract a decent audience without damaging the Ten on BBC1, then I would have thought that was a success story for the TV news industry in general.

Dear ITV,

What a shame News and Ten pandered to sensationalism last night, broadcasting live from the Antartic in a pure PR stunt.

The opening credits to the show again highlights ITVs focus towards London and retreat from the regions. There's more to the UK than the River Thames, London Eye and Big Ben. Living in North West I feel excluded, goodness knows what people in Scotland must think.

It's been nice to see ITV promoting its news coverage this week, however it's a shame that this will be all forgotten about next Monday.
How about promoting your regional news more? Or is ITV letting that slowly die away too, only for it to be shunted onto the ITVLocal internet, nothing more than a one man camcorder operation.

Yours disappointed.

I agree with the first bit about the sensationalism and PR stunts (yes the BBC did the same with Simpson's report but at least that was a good piece which told us more than there is some ice melting somewhere).

However I completely disagree with the second bit. London is the capital city. It is the figurehead that represents the whole of the UK. It's actually where most news happens because it's where the country is governed from, and more people live there than in any other town or city.

Anyone with any brains knows that featuring the Thames in the titles (and yes it's not London, it's just the river - I hear people from Finsbury Park moaning now) doesn't mean that they are watching London Tonight, they know it's just a title sequence leading up to "Big Ben", the symbol of News at Ten.

How odd that all the posters predicting the BBC would be "trounced" and that they were running scared, forgetting that most people aren't really that interested in CGI and snazzy graphics, have suddenly disappeared into the ether!

How accurate are these 'initial' figures though? Did the BBC definitely win?
