ITV want a 'classic' news show to appeal to viewers who the research said were fed up with perching, walking, talking, simpering and superficial twoways. It's the anti kaplinski.

They wanted a show that was familier but would not look out of place in 2008.

That is what they got.

I really dont understand how anyone can bitch about the rendering of big ben, when a swooping flyby of a perfically lit river thames is not exactly a natural point of view.. Not right for you? why? the chances are your expecting a certain 'look' for news titles and that itself makes your preconceptions a cliche.

You should watch it, and in context ,to offer a valid opinion.

It looks like ITN and feels familier: Job done.

In a 200+ channel age faces like Trevor may look out of place, but he's got the recognition factor for channel hoppers. Huw Edwards at 10 doing a (pointless) 2way a dreary enviroment reporter then a party line report from Nick Robinson is a massive switch off for viewers in places like the North West, North East and Yorkshire - flip to cosy old trevor and some new girl (on sky her average audience was in the tens of thousands rather than millions) bingo. ratings.

The virtual set is impressive - and having been spending far to much with time orad, brainstorm and rtsw demos I have seen alot of so-so examples - and Mr Smith and Mrs Patel at home would not be able to tell you the BBC use a real wall and ITV a green screen.

Shame it launched on such a dull news day - even channel 4 news was struggling a bit last night.

May I say, that was a rather splendid post, Gary. And highly accurate too.

In fact, I think we got just what we wanted - good pres, limited number of gimmicks, no standing or perching, good format and amazing music - back to basics with a modern twist.

If I was UK based, I would definately watch this over BBC News. News at Ten is an institution and Grade has been clever enough to realise that the public will tune-in to this comfortable format, with not a dancing star or ice skater in sight!!!!!!!

Did you not realise this is a forum to talk about TV pres? I think people have every right to 'bitch' about the visual pres of News at Ten. Thats why most of us are here.

Well I'm very impressed. Whilst i don't think the music is as powerful as the original NaT 1992 Orchestral arrangement, it's a lot better than it was in the promos and quite powerful.

The title CG was absolutely astounding. It was just as awe inspiring as the sequence it was based on when i first saw that in the 80s.

Julie and Trev were spot on presenting wise, even though Trev got a bit more presenting time. You could clearly tell that Julie was enjoying being there. Just look at her staring at Trev at the end. Laughing

Nice to see they've gone for a simple fade in-fade out aston which i think works very well. The ITV News one and the regional ones especially are way too over-animated for my liking.

I don't have a bad word to say about this revamp. good studio, good directing, good stories, good presenting. Was like the old days again. Lets hope they can keep the standard up. We even got a regional ident straight into the news tonight. Reminds me of the old daysssss Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Laughing

The most important thing was that it didn't feel like a 25 minute bulletin - it absolutely flew along. That's what a TV programme is supposed to be like.

Yep the pace was very very good. But they needed that to prevent viewers leaving. I really enjoyed it, role on tonight!

I approached this with a completely open mind, because for the last few months I didn't believe that ITV were going to do this relaunch any justice and we would end up with just a sad imitation of the old programme. I have also been an avid BBC News viewer for as long as I can remember, so didn't want to dish the dirt unfairly. However,

Arrow The title sequence is better than expected; the slowing down as we "fly" around the London Eye is quite dramatic when mixed with the music, although my mind tells me that there are one too many beats of the bass drum before the bongs.

Arrow Despite my numerous posts about how tacky a CSO set would look, I was impressed. It looks amazing, and can only imagine how it would look in HD. I actually liked the "glass panels" far more than I thought from the publicity shots.

Arrow The graphics and stings throughout were subtle and matched the style of the programme.

Arrow The closing sequence took me back more years than I care to remember. I'd forgotten how good that music actually sounds.

On the whole, an excellent return. ITV certainly haven't wasted the opportunity on the evidence of the first night. The only real negative point for me was Trevor McDonald. But his rather false over-emphasis of particular vowels has always annoyed me.

Spot on. I agree with pretty much all your comments. I was very impressed. Smile

My opinion: News at Ten is impressive. It is filled with news - no "celebrity" stories, no sensationalistic news - and it fits with today's pointless digital television era.
I was unsure with Julie Etchingham at first, but she improved by the first five minutes.
I have never been a big fan of the BBC Late News being on at 10, it was far better when it was at 9. Let's all start a 9 O'Clock News campaign!
I must say watching News at Ten was like watching it in the Alastair Burnet-era. Speaking about Alastair, has his opinions on the resurrection of the News at 10pm being heard?

Not a personal attack against your suggestion, but I cannot see the BBC moving their late bulletin. It would leave them completely open to accusations of cowardess and defeat.
