As I've said about two or three times in various threads tonight, ITV News did a week-long undercover investigation in Zimbabwe in September. It's not a new piece of journalism by any stretch of the imagination. The Diana story, on the other hand, was huge. For 10 years everyone presumed she was on the verge of marrying Dodi and now another guy has emerged from the woodwork. I think more people will have been interested in that than another report on Zimbabwe (come to think of it, the BBC Ten seems to like Zimbabwe for a lead story on a big night - check out a video of the relaunched BBC Ten from January 2003 and see which story they led with....).

I have no brief for the Beeb but having just watch part of NaT I'm glad I stuck with the 10. The titles may be a resurrection of the old ones but now they just look tacky with their computer-generated weaving across London. It also says a lot that NaT began with an interview with someone who had something to do with Diana whilst the BBC smuggled someone into Zimbabwe. It says a lot about intent - start as you mean to go on and all that. They could have pulled anything out of the hat and it's an interview with an old crush of someone who's been dead a decade! As for the live from Antarctica - the Beeb had someone on board Greenpeace's boat chasing the Japanese whalers OFF Antarctica.

See, the bit before the 'bongs' sounds like the theme from 2001 A Space Odyssey.
Bring back the 2000 music

Yeah but this "someone who had something to do with Diana" was very high on the news agenda today, including at the BBC. The BBC smuggled someone into Zimbabwe - big deal. Do you think they would have done that if News at Ten didn't start today? Nah, me neither.
As for my thoughts anyway... mixed. Some elements of the presentation were excellent, some didn't work for me. The whole headline sequence was too drawn out, and I hated the sweep across the studio after that, the music didn't fit and it seemed to slow the pace right down. It sounded like it was going to a break. A really deep beat would have made the headlines sound better - yeah, even if that would maybe sound a bit BBC. I agree with Martin about the weird thing the logo did with each bong too - it just didn't work.
The studio looked amazing, as did the graphics. Julie was, as ever, an absolute star. A flawless performance from her. I wonder when we'll see her in the "normal" studio for the first time, that will be weird. As for Trevor - you know, he gets knocked a fair bit on here, but you have to admit, the guy's still got it. I don't know what it is about him, but he is just perfect for the show, every word he says I feel I have to believe. The two of them are an excellent choice for the show.
I'm glad they didn't make too big a deal of the "and finally" - the amount of times it's been mentioned in the last week, it was in danger of becoming a parody of itself.
All in all - not bad.

Oh please! The titles are an institution over here, and they've been revived, they are, in my opinion, much better than a red and black globe with some swirls around it. The music, again is known. Its the ITN jingle, its been brought back - people know it. As for the set, were you watching BBC One? News at Ten's set is great! So much authoritive and sombre than the BBC's. The content- they had exclusives, which mattered to people. The BBC repeated a WEEK of coverage ITV News had on Zimbabwe, with one of their presenters and experienced reporters, Mark Austin.
I can't wait to see how the ratings come out!

I think the majority wanted to see a complete overhall and fresh approach. But why should they change, best keep to what's already been tried and tested.
The Bongs and Opening Titles have been landmark to the News At Ten, it's basically like saying lets get rid of the music for Match Of The Day

Not really, believe it or not the Diana story was the big one of the day, all media outlets are leading with it, even the BBC News website.
Not that it isn't worthy of mention, but ITV News already did the Zimbabwe thing late last year.
Yes but the Ten decided to be different, and dare I say it, more highbrow. NaT didn't.
