I was really impressed by that bulletin tonight. As others have said, it is a bit early to judge it editorially with it being the first night. That said, like Gavin, I was pleased with the distinct lack of live two-ways which used to pepper the News at 10.30.
Presentationally, I think it is the best news programme on TV. The music is superb. I don't why people are saying it's not powerful - the hairs on the back of my neck were standing up! Maybe you didn't have the TV volume loud enough? That post-headlines sting was absolutely fantastic. The music is a nice blend of pre-1992 and 1992-1999 whilst feeling fresh and modern at the same time.
The set and graphics were very moody - perfect for a late night news bulletin. The titles were just awesome - they blow the BBC's globe and ribbons titles out of the water!
All in all, an excellent start. Compared to that, the BBC looks outdated. I wonder what they'll come up with for their re-brand later this year? The most important thing was that it didn't feel like a 25 minute bulletin - it absolutely flew along. That's what a TV programme is supposed to be like.

Clean look, consistent and well designed graphics style, nice gallery production, in studio tersm it was very well executed. Lighting and VR set design and implementation were impressive. So what if the reflections on the floor don't make sense - they still look good!
Everything improved on the old Theatre of News implementations - though there was a slight stiffness and formality and almost a coldness as well. (The glacial desk and lots of blue probably caused it)
Sir Trevor showed his limitations - he really isn't a polished studio performer these days. On previous sets when he mainly had just the one camera to look at (no two shots after all) he was fine. Julie came over as much the better of the two.
Will I be a regular viewer - probably not.
The BBC did well to hjave a decent scoop on the Ten with John Simpson reporting in Zimbabwe, and then doing a live from there (from where all western news organisations are banned)
Their titles are a very impressive bit of design - but they are something the BBC would probably never do. They are the complete antithesis of BBC News presentation.
The News at Ten is basically saying "This is Westminster, Centre of the World" - and are very Westminster, London and British-centric. They are certainly iconic - and feature the time prominently...
The BBC Titles - as they are used consistently across BBC News - from BBC World to BBC One via News 24 - have to have a stronger feeling of "News from around the globe" feel and feel part of a larger brand.
ITV/ITN are creating a separate "News at Ten" brand - the BBC Ten O'Clock News is exploiting the greater "BBC News" brand.
The News at Ten titles are brilliantly executed and work well as standalone titles - but I'm not sure they do anything for the ITV News brand. (No tie in to the regions etc.) It will be interesting to see whether the other network bulletins on ITV1 reflect any of the new branding (minus the X)
They have effectively reclaimed their heritage of days gone by by reusing the same titles and music concepts with production tweaks and improvements. Whether they have left it a bit late to resurrect the brand after so long only time will tell.

I had the surround sound on
They need the 2000 theme, really. I agree with you on everything else though.

The News At Ten Plates reminded me of the early 90's BBC News intro's when they'd fade from a wide shot over to the news desk... or is that just me?

Whilst that is admirable of the BBC, ITV did a week-long undercover investigation in Zimbabwe back in September.

Only seen the video on TV Newsroom - but my goodness, it looks brilliant. Trust me, I'm not an ITV fan generally, not even normally an ITV News fan, but that looks really good. The titles, the music, the set, all looks great - even the questionable agenda seemed really high brow stuff when it is shown like that. Hopefully those stories are just a one off, and we'll see a more serious agenda in the future.
