ITN News will go head to head with the BBC's prime-time news for the first time in broadcasting history and the TV industry is salivating at the prospect of an unprecedented battle of the bulletins.

Some of these Guardian writers really do need to check out their facts before committing finger to key.

Is that not correct then?

When News at Ten was revived briefly in 2001, it went head to head with BBC News.

Ah yes, of course. Although I'm not sure both programmes ever started at exactly the same time... Wink

Does anyone think that the BBC will start The Ten just before 10pm, in order to try to keep viewers who may be tempted to change to ITV?

I think it all depends on the nine

I cannot believe they'd do that. After all the 'News at When' criticism and the subtle BBC jibes at the ITV 11pm bulletin on a Friday, it's almost unthinkable for them to shift their programme from anything other than the precise top of the hour. I'd be very disappointed if both programmes don't start at exactly the same time.

To be fair when "ITV News at Ten" did screen at ten (so about twice a week then), it did normally start at 10pm exactly.

Rose tinted spectacles and all that, but the old News at Ten rarely started at exactly 10pm - and indeed with some of the older titles the clock itself shows things like 10:04 etc.

The breadth of the Ten's coverage will be in evidence again this week, and viewers will enjoy some memorable stories.
With both ITN and the BBC promising big scoops, it should be a good week for fresh news stories. Certainly competition in the publics interest.

I don't suppose anyone knows if they'll bring back a version of the traditional closing theme? I used to love that variation. Once you heard it, you knew it was nearly time for bed.
