Am I the only one to think the new titles look like some sort of action-movie promo?

Just a quick straw poll

Here are some past opening titles from NAT, which do you like best?

1970's

1981

1985

1988

1992

2002

2008

Even though we can't see the whole of them I have to say the 2008 titles look like the best. Although, as others have mentioned, the music is better on older versions.

The 1992 version later changed...by the mid 1990s the "ITN Independent Television News" ident was gone, replaced with "ITN" over the title sequence. The ITN newsroom was no longer shown and there was no wide shot after the headlines.

Correct, as illustrated in this clip from 1996...

I've just heard the bed and the sting for the first time, and they both sound quite good (even if the sting seems very cheaply synthesised).

I really can't get over the poor music though. It really sounds like a bad mock to me. Very bad synthesising of the 1992 onwards orchestral theme. How hard would it have been for them to have recorded it with a proper orchestra?

Er, much more likely to be "how expensive"?

This is how I reckon it will work:

1) ITV1 continuity (around 9:59:30): Now on ITV1, we join Trevor McDonald and Julie Etchingham for tonight's News at Ten (or something along those lines; I doubt ITN or ITV News will be mentioned).

Are you serious? 9:59:30? For what reason? It'll start at 10 o'clock!

He means 30 seconds for the continuity, so the news starts dead on 10.

Most continuity is only ten seconds, fifteen at the most - with a sting or ident. And the words he used for continuity are only 5 seconds long!

Why did 1985 only have a bong for the first headline?

If the titles are 30 seconds long, they should start at 9:59:30 so that the news is ready to start on the firs bong.

Er, no. The programme will surely start at 22:00:00. The bongs seems to have become synonymous with ITV News through the years, but I don't think they were ever intended as a genuine reflection of the exact time of Big Ben's bongs. If they were, they'd need to include all of Big Ben's pre-amble chimes up to the hour and then have ten headline bongs! It's merely a 'device'.

When did use of the theme in that 2002 Youtube clip begin and end?

What a fantastic update of the titles and music - and great that they've gone back to the 80s for the true sprit of the programme. It really stamps authority - I just hope the content is brought into line.

With Sir Trevor presenting I still won't watch though as I've never liked the weird stresses and emphasis he places on certain words and parts of words when he speaks - really grates.

My only small criticism with the theme tune (that's actually made me laugh), is the longer drum lead-in to the first Bong:

In the 80s it went - "dom dom dom dom BONG"
2008 - "dom dom dom dom, dom dom dom dom - BONG".

Being so very used to the 80s version, it just sounds funny (ha ha) for some reason, perhaps a little overdone!
