Incidentally, there was always an error with the way the old News at Ten titles began. They always started dead at the top of the hour, as the regional clocks attest, meaning the bongs started at around twenty seconds past the hour. However, in reality, the bongs should start dead on the hour.

Call me picky, but it always peed me off.

But doesn't Big Ben have the chimes for the hour before the bongs anyway, so it might be about right!

As for headline beds - I didn't remember any either, but watching a clip on YouTube earlier with John Suchet hosting sometime in the early nineties and there did seem to be something in the background.

That was when News at Ten went all wrong. Single headed, and titles ending in an office for God's sake rather than on 'Big Ben'.

The titles look great, although not too innovative. Harry Potter and his gang also flew down the same path in the order of the phoenix - starting at Canary Wharf.

Talking about Harry Potter, in Prisoner of Azkaban, they had a nice transition through a large clock face, moving into the glass, a transition like that for Big Ben, into the studio would have been nice, instead of the dodgy stop on the poor CGI version. Also using the normal Big Ben clock face for the titles, makes the new ITV Modernised version stand out like a sore thumb. Also why does London seem so empty in the titles...

You can see the reverse version of that clock sequence here...

I can't view any of the vids on the ITV site, has anyone YouTube'd them yet?

Managed to get round the DRM, so here is the new title sequence (the black fades during it were on the original ITV video).

Looks good, obviously the fades won't be there, but I'm not sure on the new arrangement of the familiar music. It sounds rather bland.

What is happening with News at Ten is surely a presentation fan's dream. Reviving an old identity, check, making a big effort with a relaunch, check, creating a different look that stands out from other bulletins, check

Anyone who is doubting all this is being far too pessimistic

Exactly what I thought- this is what people always seem to dream of in this forum. Especially the individual identity element which many seem to prefer to a single 'bulletin-wide' identity.

I really do like the new set, and i'm glad that they are calling 'News at Ten' the flagship bulletin because i always saw it as such back in the day. I always saw the Early Evening news slot as the BBC road to home.

I really can't get over the poor music though. It really sounds like a bad mock to me. Very bad synthesising of the 1992 onwards orchestral theme. How hard would it have been for them to have recorded it with a proper orchestra? The theme has no gravitas and no authority in Synth form. It sounds so 'Casio Keyboard' as i said before. Especially the awful drums.

The visual titles though (the parts we're allowed to see so far) look stunning though. I always thought the original CGI passover of London in the 80s was a brilliant bit of CGI work and so is this one. I just wish the music matched the quality of the visuals.

When the new News At Ten broadcasts are put up on ITV.com, surely even ITV couldn't so petty as to apply DRM to them!

(FWIW, contrary to popular belief, Big Ben is the main bell inside the clock tower, not the clock itself.)

When watching the new titles I expected something similar, as though it should keep going through the clock face and then into the studio, though I presume that they will lead straight into the headlines from this. And is it just me that thinks that the tower and clock face look weird from the straight on view?

It always used to be seen from the straight on view.
