Why? It's the same as the old music, which was fantastic - iconic.
No, it's not. It's a poor re-recording, using a horrible synthesised orchestra, of the original. That said, I would have preferred a re-recording of the 1990s theme - for some reason I was thinking Stomp -esque drums would work quite well with it.
It seems that there is a bed being used over the bongs, which never happened (unfortunately) before 1999. That may sound a bit better. I do like the titles, although I do think the endcap, just as the first bong starts, is a bit iffy; will the News at Ten logo appear at this point, or will we just see the clockface?
Incidentally, there was always an error with the way the old News at Ten titles began. They always started dead at the top of the hour, as the regional clocks attest, meaning the bongs started at around twenty seconds past the hour. However, in reality, the bongs should start dead on the hour.
Call me picky, but it always peed me off.

I wonder how James Mates feels with Mark and Julie taking the Friday slot now
I think he will just be a correspondent now and present when main presenters are on holiday.

That is, without doubt, picky.

Well from what I've seen it does look dramatically better than the current presentation. The graphics seen on the promo at the end of the Evening News/News at 10.30 today do have a somewhat News 24 feel to them, albeit in blue.
Have agree with people about the music too, does sound very dated, and the naff ending to the titles, the clockface just doesn't look right and looks rather cheap.
Have to wait till Monday to see it all properly though.

But doesn't Big Ben have the chimes for the hour before the bongs anyway, so it might be about right!
As for headline beds - I didn't remember any either, but watching a clip on YouTube earlier with John Suchet hosting sometime in the early nineties and there did seem to be something in the background.

Pre-1992 there definitely was no headline music. They just used the plain bongs. The 1992 re-recorded theme featured a very light bed (effectively just a drone) beneath the bongs but the bongs were much more prominent. For the 2008 version they seem to have cranked it up a notch and added a beat.
