Yes, well, despite any good authority you may have it on, it's been in the public domain for a while that he'll probably only do two or three nights a week. Even if he does four nights for a couple of months at first, its unlikely that he'll carry on doing so. Fact is, he's already retired once and even before that he was sharing his shifts with John Suchet and never averaged four nights a week.
Personally I think it's desperate & unnecessary to bring back Sir Trevor - surely if Mark isn't doing well enough or not popular enough they could bring in an outsider? Someone with the Gravitas and experience they're looking for such as Jeremey Thompson (Sky), Dermot Murnaghan (Sky/ BBC), Peter Sissons etc.
What's they're fasination with Sir Trevor - especially if he's only here for a year or two. That's why Mark's here, so that if all goes well he can take over [again]. I hope people stay to the Ten O'Clock News myself.
Mark has been photoshopped to death in that picture.
People are saying that the News at Ten relaunch will be short lived, and they will continue to bring back the News at Ten every now and again to give ITV News a boost but to be honest, I think they will stick at it this time. I can't see it moving back because the 10pm slot is a graveyard slot, and the way ITV might see it is put the news on then, then have programming which can make them more money from 10.30pm onwards.
It will be interesting to see the ratings war between the not well publicised single headed BBC News at Ten, and the highly publicised double headed News at Ten itself. I think ITV will snatch it for about a week, then people will start going back to the BBC although ITV's ratings will stay higher than they do for the current Late News.
John Suchet was a great presenter and as you say, he is presenting Five News and could be somewhere better ... ITV So he could easily be lured back.
Though he's just left five news!
Has he really? What, so he's left newsreading for good now?
Not sure whether he's retiring again but he left five at the end of December (in preparation for Natasha Kaplinsky). Guess he could crop up somewhere else soon. I actually really like him - enough experience but friendly.

"Graveyard slot"? You don't work in television scheduling, do you?
The 10 O'Clock news on BBC1, for example, gets in by far the biggest viewing figures (for news) each day, beating evening and lunchtime bullitens. That's why it's the 'flagship' bulliten. It's generally on news channels or sometimes after the news that no one watches.

Exactly - Dermot was obviously looking for something and if they didn't want to go with Mark, I'd have rather seen him return to ITN to host it than Sir Trev.
Personally I've always rated Mark Austin, though admittedly he is far better when presenting on location than when in the studio - I imagine he'll do that for News at Ten when required too.
One thing they've been very clever about though is bringing in Julie to co-host - that will be an important weapon in it's battle with the BBC as for some completely unjustifiable reason co-hosted bulletins often seem more viewer friendly than those anchored alone.

No, but ITV have had trouble filling that slot since they moved the late news back to 10.30pm. Apart from Benidorm, they have struggled to consistently find hits. (This doesn't include 90 minute programs). BBC News dominates the 10pm slot, and ITV struggle to reach the 3m mark with standalone shows therefore it is a graveyard slot.
Agreed Brekkie - Mark is excellent on location and I'd imagine he'll do well in the "sh*t hot" assignments which will apparently be exclusive to News at Ten. Stuff like the Big Melt week and the undercover stuff, he's great with all that.
Trevor will just sit in the studio and read most probably with Julie leading.
