A good time to have the news on Saturday, 11pm, but not really on Friday. We'll have to wait and see how this plays out, I can tell.

Well 11pm worked fine during 2001-2004 - it was the later editions from Mon-Thu which were the main problem. As I've said before though this time round to show their commitment they really needed to put News at Ten five nights a week.

And as you say, it's the weekend bulletins which need sorting out too, especially Saturdays which are ridiculously early and ridiculously late.

Presumably now Sundays early-evening bulletin will be on the move too - Dancing on Ice is at 5.45pm so I assume it'll be before that, meaning ITV1 are effectively axing one of their highest rating bulletins of the week.

I think as long as Saturday and Sunday's bulletin is at 11pm its fine, they need a structured schedule, having Fridays at 11pm, Saturdays at 10.35pm and Sundays at 11.40pm for example, isn't going to work at all.

I like how they're branding the Friday news though.

I hope The Late News has a distinctive style to it.

Some one clear this up for me - there is going to be 3 presenters of News at 10? Does that mean Mark Austin will stand in for Trevor when he's off?

I really wanted this to work for ITV but really don't think it will pay off.

Firstly anything will be better than the current News at 10.30. Mark Austin is very wooden and totally lacking personality and the content is really over-sensationalist and not serious enough for a flagship news programme.

But I don't think Sir Trev is any better. People like him, but in a "oh he's a nice old boy... safe pair of hands" kind of a way. He is just no longer on top form.

And ITV have left it too late. Any flick through the ratings pages of Broadcast magazine will show you that the BBC Ten O'Clock News is week-after-week the highest rated news show. It regularly scores 5-million plus. How ITV can expect to just bring back Sir Trev, slap the great old 'News at Ten' brand on and expect a winning formula against, what is now a very good offering from the Beeb, I don't know.

If this is to work it needs far more than an aging presenter and much-loved brand, it needs a bit of decent journalism restored at ITV News. (Oh and on that point I much prefered the ITN brand- although I think it's been too long ago to bring that back- and I don't know if ITN would want their brand on a sensationalist fluffy "news" show.)

I hope it works out for them. I'm just Praying for some big changes. Wink

Surprise surprise I disagree. (it's nothing personal, honest! Laughing )

I just think though if they're putting effort into branding the Friday bulletin they're just not interested in the Weekend bulletins as a whole.

As someone said, relaunching the Weekend News with the late bulletins fixed at 11pm from Friday to Sunday would be a very good move.

One mad plan, one hopes abandoned, is to locate the bulletin “within” the clock tower itself, cogs and wheels clicking in the background.

Reminds me a bit of the "On The Record" set, which was designed based on the features of Big Ben...

It's perfectly acceptable to have the News at Ten running Monday to Thursdays only

People are less interested in the news on a Friday, neither the BBC or ITV would run an big exclusive investigative report on a Friday. Channel 4 News is shorter on a Friday, Isn't Newsnight shorter on a Friday, most big name presenters have Friday's off rather than any other night

In the same way, with people being less interested in news at weekends, that's why bulletins moving about a bit is not important, people are more likely to watch the bulletin in between other shows, less likely to tune in specifically, particularly the late bulletin

I've thought for many years that TV should go into a weekend mode from 7pm on a Friday, would make the weekened start earlier for those seeking entertainment.

The old Thames / LWT switch at 7pm if played correctly could have started this 40 years ago.

The backdrop shown just now behind Trevor and Julie was back to front!

The view of the South Bank was the wrong way round.
