Good to see the Friday NaT is being reinstated, long overdue. Other than
Al Murray's Happy Hour
, I can't think of one decent programme that's occupied the 10pm slot on a Friday.
I guess it's a bit more cutting back, as they no longer have to find or produce a 10-11pm filler, where as come 10.40pm, they can just dump on anything they like, ie and most likely a Movie.
This is quite a good sign of commitment from current ITV management on the future of NaT.
The last old one was broadcast Friday 5th March 1999, it only took 10 years for it to be reinstated properly.
Excellent decision IMO - News at Ten should always have been 5 nights a week. I dont see why Julie wont present 5 nights a week - doesnt mean she cant take the Friday off some weeks - and remember Julie was the presenter of the late news on Fridays until it was reduced to 1 presenter.
Brekkie, dont see how this will mean Julie will also present the evening news as stand in cover? She has never to my knowledge presented any other bulletin apart from News At Ten and The Late News. They use Katie and Lucy to cover the EN (and I assume Nina when she returns)
Also Mary, Katie and James have been the only presenters to present News At Ten when either of the main 2 arent there.

Wasn't that within weeks of it starting though?
Newsreaders across the board don't seem to do a 5-day week, and that's why I doubt Julie will either. I'm just thinking on Friday's it'll probably become common place for the same hosts to front the Evening News and News at Ten, and hence when Julie is in on Fridays she'll start doubling up, with the Lunchtime News presenter doing London Tonight instead. I'd also imagine if she is available she'd be preferred to the likes of Romily Weaks and Lucy Meacock.
Usually, the female Lunchtime News presenter does the Evening News too. It is most likely, that on a Friday, James Mates will be joined by Julie/Mary/Katie. I doubt we will see Lucy or Romilly on NaT.

Exactly.
The rota could be;
Lunchtime News - Alistair and Katie (Mon-Wed), Alistair and Romilly (Thurs), Geraint and Romilly/Lucy (Friday)
Evening News - Mark and Mary (Mon-Thurs), Geraint and Romilly/Katie/Lucy (Fri)
News At Ten - Mark and Julie (Mon-Thurs) James and Katie (Fri)
Katie could have a day off presenting the lunchtime news on Thurs because she is in on Friday doing the EN and News at Ten. Katie and Mary could even alternate having Thurs/Fri off.
If Julie doesn't do the Friday NaT, I would love to see Lucy and James front the programme every week. Lucy is such a great addition to ITV News, and after so many years within ITV, she deserves (if she wants, obv.) to have the chance of more fixed roll on the National News.

No need for Julie to present the Evening News.
I think that would be the strongest of the likely arrangements but I still expect it to end up with Julie being scheduled for all five days (News at Ten only), with her having fairly regular days off.

Not suprisingly, the article states that ratings for the bulletin increased to 2.5m almost exactly at the point Trevor left ITN last year. I have to say Mark and Julie are indeed a good pairing on screen and certainly work well together on the programme.
Usually on a Friday I am forced to watched the BBC News At Ten. It seems so boring, with ITV I feel that there is personality and life in the team. Now NaT is airing on Friday I won't have to watch the BBC News! Yipee! Also I think that NaT is the best bulletin out of the LN and EN. EN IMO Is the worst.
I think it is one case really where they can actually pass the blame for the ratings. There's probably very little they could do themselves to boost the ratings - I think the onus is on ITV to increase the ratings in the 9pm hour to give them a better inheritence.
