Anyone capture the video of the end of NaT for those of us who missed it?

Just a low key exit for Trevor, then. A quick thank you from Julie and the team (wouldn't it have been nice to hear the 'ITN' name there?!) and Trevor signed off as usual. He seemed a bit uncomfortable during Julie's little tribute there. All we got was a slightly extended closing sequence to give us one last look at Trevor!

And wasn't it a perfect example of the awkward and ever so slightly uncomfortable 'onscreen' relationship between Sir Trev and Julie? He just never looked very at ease with a co-presenter. Although to be fair he never looked very at ease on his own either.

Still - despite my general view that Sir Trev was always a terrible newsreader - it is the end of an era.

It is rather odd reading "BBC News at Ten" though! I always associate the News at Ten name with ITN - Ten O'Clock News is what the BBC bulletin is supposed to be called.

Ah yes but in a marketing world where BBC News 24 is deemed to be too disjointed from the BBC News brand, BBC 10 O'Clock News just doesn't cut it any more. Rolling Eyes

How would you explain the BBC News At Five O'Clock on the BBC News channel, which I have seen advertised but never watch? Or is that too disjointed from the BBC News brand?

It was indeed somewhat cringeworthy, Bob. I felt almost as uncomfortable as Julie looked when reading her 'impromptu' tribute from the script on her desk as she faced Sir Trevor in the closing moments.

Meanwhile, he was spinning in his seat, possibly trying to find the right camera as usual, or just thinking 'who is this woman'?

Perhaps NaT's viewing figures will improve now they are no longer dragging the legacy of their previous incarnations with them. Bringing back Sir Trevor always seemed like a publicity stunt taken too far: about 10 months too far. Confused

I made a special effort to watch last night (well, Sky+ it), but I remain resolutely a BBC News viewer. Thumb Right

it seems he may may resume presenting links for each tonight programme from December.

I hope that isn't the case unless he is actually going to have greater involvement such as editorial responsibilities. Including somebody's name in the title simply because they do a scripted 60 second introductory and closing segment isn't justified and rather misleading. They may as well have the former soap actress from the Sainsbury's commercials performing the role.

'Tonight' surely has good enough viewing figures since it changed to the shorter title. The reports now resemble the old 'World in Action' or 'TV Eye' programmes of many years ago, which didn't rely on a single name to boost their profile.

I liked how News At Ten ended last night. It was very poignant, as has been written. I don't agree with "Trevor looked uneasy...he didn't know where he was...who is she..." - he did look a bit embarrassed to be acknowledged in this way - John Suchet was the same when he retired from ITN. It was a nice way to send him off, albeit with no publicity as such. Not even a mention from the continuity announcer at the beginning. What a catchy tune at the end there - especially the first part of the tune [a repeated der der der der der]! Excellent bulletin last night.

Therein lies the problem: all the established names for many years left /retired from ITN since the start of the year 2000: Nicholas Owen, John Suchet, Trevor McDonald, Julia Somerville, Carol Barnes, Andrew Harvey, Terry Lloyd [but yet he was killed], Colin Baker, Harry Smith, Michael Brunson, Michael Nicholson, Angela Rippon etc. I know that is partly-nostalgia though.

Concerning the Tonight programme, I would like to see him 'do more stuff ' on it, but maybe he's now only allowed to do limited hours now because of his age. Who knows? I don't mind the Tonight programme. It is building on its reputation but World In Action was excellent. "Tonight" would be good with some foreign investigative reporting - mind you, the same applies for News At Ten.

I had not realised that the 5pm slot had retained 'O'Clock' in its name post-rebrand but the key is that it is now BBC News at Five O'Clock, pre-rebrand it was known as the BBC Five O'Clock News Hour.

I'm on your side here; I find the new branding just as ridiculous as you do!

"Sir Trevor McDonald's final News at Ten was watched by 3.2 million viewers last night, Thursday November 20 – 100,000 more than his previous farewell from ITV news in 2005."

That long, distant closing shot and the extended music made me release just how good the News at Ten set and the modified theme tune actually is!

The current News at Ten backdrop is by far the best one EVER used by ITN.

No, it was the NaT closing theme.

I thought NaT was excellent tonight. They devoted about 20 minutes to the big economic news of the day and they presented the fairly complex story in a simple, accessible style which I found rather engaging. I don't have a detailed knowledge of economics and I felt very satisfied with NaT's coverage tonight - they answered all my questions. ITN/ITV seem to be consistently excellent at presenting complex news in a clear and accessible way. Their US election coverage was equally as good whereas the BBC's was too complicated and disjointed. I really don't think ITN get the credit they deserve as people choose the BBC by default, which is sometimes a shame. I actually think ITN's limited resources help their coverage of these events as it forces them to make hard choices and in the end produces clean, simple yet accessible programming. The problem I sometimes find with the BBC is that their extensive resources give them too many options. They often decide to try to include too much and hence confuse things in the process.
