A bit of deja vu there.
Wonder if Trevor''s 30 second intros will return then on Tonight? Has he even fronted any specials since he stopped fronting the show?

McDonald will be replaced by Mark Austin...
However, he will continue hosting the National Television Awards, and working on ITV1's current affairs Tonight programme, plus some documentaries currently in development.
Austin will continue to present the early evening ITV Evening News alongside Mary Nightingale.

Moving Mark & Mary to News at Ten and giving the Evening News to Julie (on her own) would have worked IMO. I find that Mary suits News at Ten more than Julie, and the couple of episodes of the Friday late bulletin Julie did in the ITV style she seemed to be a lot better than in the News at Ten style.
They could have used the opportunity to give the other bulletins a bit of a presentational shake up or even expand the News at Ten look across all of the bulletins, but keep the individual presenting styles. I was sad enough earlier on to look at a clip on youtube from the 2004 relaunch where everything seemed a lot tighter and looked more professional than today

Editorially its not that different because that came before the whole 'full blown' sensationalism thing (but it still is a bit). I'm not saying go back to that but after seeing that again and what they have done with News at Ten, it really begs the question why has it got worse over time and not better, and why does the current look seem so dated? (I sound like the script writer for the opening of the generic bulletins there

I don't. I think Mary should have been given the Evening News to anchor solely, or perhaps Alastair replacing Mark on the Evening News. If Mark has to present both bulletins, could he at least look as if he's interested in what he's reading?!

I agree, I much prefer Mary to Julie to be honest.
Cant say im surprised Mark is doing both bulletins, who else could they give the EN to really, that could commit to 4/5 nights a week of presenting. James, Bill and Geraint do lots of reporting, Steve does the weekend news, there as no-one really.

Oh, how predictable! As has been written, Mark Austin being 'greedy' fronting two bulletins. I am not a huge fan of him, but one bulletin a day is enough for the viewers to see him.
The problem with Mark Austin is that he has no gravitas. Gravitas and popularity are go-words for newscasting and I don't think Mark has those qualities to present two bulletins per day.
And, anyway, when was the last time Mark Austin did a 5 day week?
If it is a case of "not enough newscasters to go around", they are plenty of good faces ITN has: Tim Ewart, Penny Marshall, Chris Rogers, Keir Simmons and others. Surely that will be one or two who would like to newscast?
Or get someone from out of ITN: Peter Sissons, Moira Stuart, John Stapleton, Penny Smith, Vivien Creegor, Alastair Yates. Or even re-hire Nicholas Owen!
Anyone agree?

News at Ten is past it, it will never be restored to the reputation it once had. I think its time for ITV to let go of the past and let their highest rated bulletin be their flagship bulletin.

It's the same situation as a couple of years ago - if the late bulletin was getting decent ratings, I'm sure Mark would quit the Evening News. However, News at Ten is the flagship bulletin in name only - the Evening News is really the big gig at ITV at the moment.

Which would mean what exactly?
The Evening News already is the flagship bulletin it's only lazy journalists looking for simple headlines that say otherwise
