Others will probably disagree with me, but I think News at Ten has improved since it first came back onto our screens.

At first, I didn't like all of the lengthy, in-depth reports meaning that actual news coverage suffered and the amount of stories reported was minimal.

However now it appears that there is more news in the bulletin, and more reports overall.

I think that's fair comment.
The early days were certainly characterised by a few lengthy packages that could have been prepared days or weeks in advance, but I think that was to make it easier to produce and keep any unknowns to a minimum until everything had settled, rather than indicative of the desired direction of the bulletin.

I take no-one else saw last night's (Thursday) NaT then? Some breaking news read out by Julie involving two stabbings. An dark orange strap with "BREAKING NEWS" in white text appeared on screen for about half a minute; nothing to get excited about but was interesting to see the programme cover a breaking story (even if it lasted just about 30 seconds).

That's happened before - I think when Heath Ledger died there was a brief item without a report with a BREAKING NEWS strap, before they moved on to the next item.

Have you noticed it is always Julie who reads out the breaking news aswell, as she is more used to it I suppose!? Wink

Like said earlier in the thread, Trevor is like a rabbit in headlights when it comes to the new NAT, but does anyone else think that if he was on single-headed pres like he always has been he would perform better?

I see no reason why he would - he was never that good a newsreader anyway.

Trevor doesn't seem comfortable with any co-presenter. I take Brekkie's point that he wouldn't necessarily be any better on his own, but I do think it would feel less awkward. The sign-off in particular is fairly cringeworthy. Julie tries to have a joke with him but he's so wooden and just wants to launch into his, albeit very good, pre-prepared sign-off.

That said, I'm getting used to the double-headed NAT now and I think we just have to bear with them while Trevor is still there. Once they find his replacement, whoever that may be, I think it will become more natrual.

He probably feels threatened because someone is invading his show, the show he has presented (collectively) for over a decade on his own, the show he has been associated with and always will be. Then some woman has come from a daytime slot on a satellite channel and is given equal status to him.

He seems very tied up with the 'old' style of presenting and doesn't seem comfortable with Julie. Likewise, Julie doesn't seem comfortable with Trevor. He always seems very sour faced. A few months ago, he did seem quite comfortable when he was presenting on his own (Julie was on location, it was when the plane fell out of the sky) and he seemed happier; likewise when Julie presented a show on her own and has done alongside Mark/James, she seemed more comfortable.

I think Julie's a bit uncomfortable when alongside Trevor because she's with someone who has been hailed as a national institution, someone who has been working in that business for over 30 years and as such is highly experienced in what he does (I'm not insinuating that Julie is less experienced than Sir Trev). Likewise Trev's a bit intimidated at co-presenting again after all these years, as has already been said.

I have to say I do enjoy seeing Julie and Trev's faces after a particularly quirky 'And Finally...'. I remember a couple of months back, Trevor could be seen in the closing sequence giggling away, much to the amusement of Julie (I seem to recall he was laughing at the name of a bird that appeared in the And Finally - it was called 'Dude'....)

Mark said at the end of tonight's EN that Julie would be live from Belgrade on NAT later on.

She presented live from Rothley on last night's programme. I have to say Trevor was much, much better by himself.. looked at all the right cameras, didn't slip up! He also seemed to have a wicked grin on his face at times, possibly because he had the studio to himself! Wink

Well Trevor read the breaking news last night on NAT that Radovan Karadzic had been arrested - he read the news with calm and ease, he didn't slip up at all. I had visions of a startled Trev looking straight to camera with a nervous expression on his face, should a breaking news story occur. Laughing

I doubt a 'professional autocue reader' would have such problems. He probably had chance to read the script during the previous VT insert. It's not like he suddenly had to do a live interview or anything that required him to have journalistic skills.

I imagine in those circumstances he would glare into the camera like a rabbit caught in car headlights.
