Why didnt they set the clock to 11 for the late news titles?

Because it would have cost more money.

Bollards. Total and utter bollards.

The 1988-1993 titles ALWAYS showed the correct time - even if one minute early or late - or one hour - because the hands on the CGI Big Ben were generated live at the top of each programme. If they could do that in 1988, why can't they do it now? We supposedly have better graphics and editing software these days that work in real-time, on-the-fly.

Actually, he was right. The titles are not rendered live and it would have cost a lot of money (in the thousands) to get a new set done.

I bet Trevor stumbles over his own feet on the way into the studio. Are they slowly reducing his involvement. I only saw the first 15mins of the bulletin, but he seemed to have the same involvement as he had on "Tonight" (ie hello and perhaps goodbye later on).

Julie seemed to be doing the important stories and down the line interviews.

Wouldn't blame them - as far as I'm concerned the sooner he goes the better. I'd be much more inclined to watch if it was Mark Austin (or indeed, absolutely anyone) in his place.

Sir Trev was on Nick Ferrari's programme on LBC yesterday to talk about "news in jeans" and the whole hype surrounding Natasha Kaplinsky and five news. I thought he sounded very "human" and was actually very funny. Even if you're not a massive fan, it's hard not to admire what he's done over the years.

Personally I'm thrilled Sir Trev is back presenting a news programme, as for me there's a real lack of stalwarts delivering the news now. Jon Snow is about the only choice there is now.

I still think it's about time we had a Michael Buerk comeback.

Hang on...I'm discussing presenters...do I need a new thread for this? Am I going off topic? Am I ruining the whole flow of the forum? So many questions...so little time!

Alot of respect for what Trevor has done, but like Peter Sissons he is now simply past it - and certainly was never in the league of Michael Buerk IMO.

Re. Peter Sissons, I think, yes, on News 24 when a breaking news story comes in he does stumble, but on a fixed national news bulletin, he still brings great authority to the programme and gives the news some sort of added gravitas as we (well, I) have seen when in the recent News 24 / BBC One simulcasts of the early evening weekend news.

I still think it's good to have Trevor back - I agree that we've lost a lot of the "old school" newsreaders in recent years - Anna Ford, Michael Buerk, Moira Stuart, Martyn Lewis etc.

I agree completely... Martyn Lewis was always a great newsreader. It's a shame all the youngsters are getting the jobs these days.

Well, he's no autocutie for sure. But I'm not quite sure what he's "done" to earn such admiration, other than have a unique pronunciation of vowels and getting a hefty salary for apparently very little work over many years.

Perhaps that is something to admire in itself.

ITV could have saved alot of money surely by having Mark Austin and Julie Etchingham presenting the programme. I doubt it has made much difference to the viewers view on News at Ten by bringing back Trevor McDonald.

Why is he past it? Does he stumble on his lines, does he miss cues? I've been watching the new News at Ten and he seems to be performing very well alongside Julie.

Even on the first night when he turned to the wrong camera, and was obviously told down his earpiece to move to the right one, he switched to it without even a stutter in his speech or blinking. I think he's still on top of his game Smile In my opinion a good newsreader should not draw attention to themselves. You should be listening to what they are saying, not how they are saying it.
