ITV always have a feel that they have been forced to bring back News at Ten by Michael Grade and just to upset him they only have it on 4-nights a week.

Quite apart from not making a great deal of sense, you seem to be implying that ITN (as distinct from ITV) are in some way "upsetting" Michael Grade by only transmitting News at Ten four nights a week. Is that really what you're saying?

Does anyone else agree that the Friday "Late News" opening titles are awful?

They have just used the News at Ten titles stopping short of coming up to the Big Ben clockface and then straight into the studio?

Couldn't they have rearranged the title sequences so as to show Big Ben at 11pm? Or even have a different variation of the titles.

I take it you didn't bother reading the last few pages then! Yes, they are bad - especially when you consider the original version of those titles back in the 80's was capable of adapting the time to the exact minute the programme aired.

Watching it for the second time tonight and I do genuinely love the music and titles. There's something really dark and serious about them, the change of key of the music from previous incarnations is fab.

You're right, Phil. The music is superb. I particularly like the post-headlines sting (even more fab than the 1992 version) and the closing music. I honestly didn't think they could better the 1992 closing music but, indeed, they have.

Have they returned to the original key of News at Ten? Over the years it has gradually gone up and up until reaching a high in 2004/2006. In my opinion, the current music used on ITV News is not authoritative enough. Let's hope they see sense and re-record the 1995-2004 theme like they have NAT.

Very bad ratings for News At Ten last night, the BBC's ten was in front by 3 million.

News at Ten
2.5m (12.9%) .

BBC 10 O'Clock News
5.5m (27.3%)

It's inheritance that's the shows biggest problem ratings wise - ITV1 just aren't cutting it at 9pm at the moment.

This has probably been mentioned already but I feel the News at Ten is missing one thing - the guy at the beginning who announces the presenter's names. I also think the headlines need to be faster.

Absolutely. Such a shame, and really why should ITV bother with decent 9pm offerings... might as well stick to trusted Caroline Quentin vehicles.

It's a shame really...having watched the Palace last night, and consequently News at Ten, I found the drama very original and very interesting, enjoyable and watchable. News at Ten is an incredibly well produced programme, and much more watchable than Huw over on the beeb.

ITV have done exactly what we've been wanting them to do for years...bringing back original hour long dramas, and News at 10! And they still can't win!

That's because Messiah on BBC 1 was a far better 'hour long drama' than the Palace- simple as that.

It hasn't really been mentioned actually, but I agree. I miss that from all bulletins actually - it just seems to give them a little bit more gravity.

Perhaps they'll introduce them when Trevor quits, but get Trevor to do the voiceovers.
