It would have put Al Murray 100% up against Jonathan Ross which despite now being a predictable show still gets the viewers.

During the period Ross is off air ITV1 could potentially win the slot with a Friday night chat show format and get a younger audience than the usual drama repeats they've used for years

I don't think ITV1 would have done very well after the news either considering at last minute they put a repeat of Honest on, which people chose not to watch on Wednesday, and pushed Heist back an hour, out of the US drama slot they were going to establish, probably losing that series any potential viewers it might have had.

I notice next week ITV1 are repeating their 9pm drama's after News at Ten. Very disappointing that there isnt more original commisions for the post News At Ten slot. ITV Wales are opting out of most of these drama repeats though to show their own things.

I don't think anyone here is suggesting they do that - most seem to agree it should move to the 10pm slot on Saturday, and then the Saturday film air at 10.35pm on Fridays.

I think that slot could work very well for films - I'm sure alot of people would like an alternative to Jonathan Ross, and as we're going back in time it was a slot often used for films back in the old days of News at Ten.

Generally though the post-News at Ten programming has been very poor - and that doesn't help with the programmes ratings. If ITV1 have something on at 10.35pm people are wanting to watch, they're likely to stick with ITV1 for the news.

There are all sorts of rumours and innuendos about why Trevor missed his interview with Gordon Brown on Tuesday morning.

If your idea of TV news is it's only important after 10pm on weeknights, fair enough - but what about during the day and over weekends. Until ITV get that sorted too, they've got along way to go.

Interesting that suggests Mark Austin's role is to report on location, though of course he didn't on Thursday.

What a twisted story. He's got some nerve stating that the team at ITN need a lesson in journalism, if that's the best he can do. He would have to pick NAT's lowest viewing figure of the week to conclude that people are deserting the 'sinking ship'. He fails to point out that the viewing figures were back up there on Thursday night with the Heathrow news. Here's a reality check for him: it's only been back a week...surely a bit too soon to be making judgements like NAT is a 'sinking ship'. Furhermore, I've never seen a chatshow use a studio like NAT! He's clearly off his rocker.

It's surely just because it had a feel that was more like the Independent than the Daily Mail . Or the Guardian , for that matter.

Totally agreed.

American chat shows often use that sort of city backdrop (you could say that the BBC do that but that's more of a "generic city".

I agree with him on the titles front that it is very gimmicky, and the fact that the first "exclusive" story was no match to the BBC's John Simpson.
