Not really, no. By your bizarre logic you would say: "If you came a respectable second in the ratings, you wouldn't be allowed to transmit the following night."

You are twisting my comments Jonathan.

If you are second you do not win sums up what I said there. Where did I say that this programme should not be allowed to transmit the following night?

Anyway back to the facts of the matter. The figures on Wednesday were bad...compared to the BBC.

I just wish they kept things consistent and had News at Ten.

Things seem to be very consistent to me. News at Ten four nights a week and The Late News on a Friday. Very straightforward. You might not like it, but it is consistent.

That is your opinion...my opinion is it makes more sense to have News at Ten five nights a week. How many mainstream news programmes change their output time on a Friday?

I was merely demonstrating that your logic, particularly from your election analogy, doesn't follow to television news. You seemed to suggest that in one programme 'winning' over another, that "second place means you do not lead". But in the battle for the 10 o'clock slot between BBC and ITV, there is no "leader" or "second place" in the sense that two programmes can quite happily compete and attract viewers concurrently. News at Ten coming behind the BBC does not mean it's necessarily a failure. Far more people are watching news at that time of night that when on the BBC Ten was on.

And on Thursday they were very good indeed!

Dear Jonathan,

I think you have picked the wrong person to wag your finger at -

1 - I was merely stating the facts and not twisting comments. Please point out where I said the programme should not transmit the following night as I cannot find any of my posts that say that?

2 - I am not disputing they were good on the Thursday I was saying the were BAD on the Wednesday. Where did I say Thursday's figures were bad?

Please if you are going to take me to task about the content of my posts make sure your posts are factually correct themselves.

You did not. I was taking your logic to the nth degree to illustrate a point and opinion. Maybe we should just leave it? Wink

I have to side with Jonathan here. Regardless of who won the slot on each night, News at Ten this week has attracted many more viewers to ITV1's late news than during the News at 10.30 era. So, even though the BBC won each night ITV has been more successful. Despite all the BBC's promo's for the Ten O'Clock News this week, their viewing figures haven't budged from pre-NAT. Whereas, ITV have boosted their news audience. To me, that's more of a success than the BBC keeping its audience.

...and - crucially - slightly more viewers than the tat ITV used to show in the 10pm slot.

So long as both those statements continue to be true, NaT has done the job it was intended to do.
