I'll just add that when the newscasts were available on the news website and not on ITV Hub I thought he was a fine anchor. His show isn't as rigid and formally structured as the BBC's (which is good as well). It's just two different styles. It's not like the newscast is completely filled with frivolous stories and fluff (like a certain network show in the states that has World in its title).
I also thought Tom did a good job anchoring the US election coverage when I checked in.
Why does ITV News bother any more with a proper late evening news programme? Yes it gives an alternative, but the days are long gone when millions watch the late evening news, either on BBC One or ITV.
If ITV really cared about news, they would have aired the Nightly Show after News at Ten, as US networks air their talk shows after the 11.00pm local newscasts. You don't see the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon airing before the local news on NBC.
ITV could have aired the Nightly Show at 10.40pm. This slot is currently dead on ITV, with local programmes, repeats of Murder She Wrote and Judge Rinder, ITV could try and redevelop it, but no they go back to what they do best, dumping their news programmes from a fixed slot.
They will never learn... So in essence we're going back to the ITV News at When.
They're already there! News at Ten already shows about 2 minutes late.
I don't think you can equate this to "News at When". Sure it isn't 22:00:00 on the dot and those tuning to ITV might face a few adverts, but they know they'll see it in the coming minutes. I don't think many people are counting the seconds at this time of day, whereas I'd be quite peeved if the 8:00am headlines came at 8:04am because I have places to be...

Obviously, with regard to the new chat show, ITV wants to make more money so that it can maintain a profit. Maintaining a profit serves the amount of money available for keeping its news coverage above the Ofcom quota. 10:30 isn't a bad time to broadcast the late news on ITV.
ITV national news coverage doesn't have to beat BBC News to do well; it simply has to get respectable numbers of viewers, which it does.

Well, uhhhh..... because it wouldn't get as many viewers at 10:40 as it would at 10:00.

In practice I'm not sure that'll turn out to be the case, but guess we'll find out to an extent in January.

Will the chat-show experiment even last 8 weeks?
After all, this time last year, ITV had News at Ten at 11:00 on some Wednesdays to make way for Champions' League highlights. That hasn't happened this year. We'll see if ITV does another U-turn.
I don't think many people are counting the seconds at this time of day
Can't do that anyway, these days. Thanks a lot, digital switchover!
Setting my Casio digital watch by the clock into the Nine O'Clock News - before we had Teletext - is one of my abiding childhood memories, sadly enough.
