Nah, 2004 was the whole "I'm Alastair Stewart, and I'm standing up" period with the bombastic music and sensationalist style of news. Admittedly this had already begun to creep in when the previous look was recoloured with the yellow-and-blue of ITV1.

Glad they've stuck to the overall look of the brand, it's the best they've had since 1999.

1999? The best look ITV News has ever had prior to the current look???

2004 was way better than 1999, even the awful 2010 look only just beat 1999.

Although I agree that 2004 was a very pleasing change, I have to disagree about the 2009 look being superior to the 1999 one. I'd much sooner have the real set than the cheap and nasty looking 2009-13 one. Even the titles with the "hero panels" were hideous and the music sounded like it had been done on a Casio keyboard and bore little resemblance to the original Awakening elements. I think 2009-13 was an all-time low for ITV News in presentation terms. The only saving grace is that it was for this relaunch that the voiceover was brought back, even if James Faulkner was nowhere near as good as Andrew Burt had been. For my tastes, the 1999-04 look was far preferable to this. It had a fairly decent set, the titles were quite simple and effective and the music had authority. Of course, it all pales when compared to the 1995-99 designs.

Maybe my memory is fading, but my recollection of 2004-06 wasn't as you describe. I tend to attribute the sensationalist, over-the-top era to 2006-08 (until News at Ten relaunched, that is). The original Theatre of News era wasn't too bad at all in my opinion. Although I agree that the seeds of sensationalism had been sown as early as 2003, if not before.

Yes that's when Deborah Turness really got stuck in with her overly-dramatic, sensationalistic news agenda influenced by the tabloids. A very poor era for ITV News.

Although it was only a reworking of the 2004 music, the 2006 theme was terrible - I think it's now highly associated with that sensationalistic era - and although 2009 wasn't great, it was nice to hear something fresh and new after five years of the same old stuff. I still think the current branding is the best since 1995. While 1999 was refreshing at the time it really hasn't aged as well as the previous crisp blue/grey era.

Ah, my memory must have rolled it all into one! Although the theme tune wasn't as good, I preferred the softer teal colour they used from 2006 onwards and much preferred the virtual atrium backdrop they used - I don't know if I'd feel the same now, but at the time I though it looked very realistic with more depth than the standard cubes backdrop they used previously.

2004 news and even sets were one of the worse periods in ITV news history. The yellow look was just as bad, Thankful somone saw since and we have a nice clean crisp sitting for the news.

Nice new 2-way graphic used just now between Bradby in London and Peston in Davos - globe/squares (as seen in the titles) used for the background.

In the two way graphic they first showed tonight, I'm pretty sure it also showed the local time as well which is a nice addition.
