Hi Good people of TV Forum,

I was wondering if you could give me a few minutes of your time to complete a questionairre I have constructed for my Media A Level project on News, and in particular News programming on Television. At first I took to my college completing questionairres but this logic completely failed as all I got were silly answers and unhelpful ideas. However I'm hoping TV Forum will be a lot more helpful and give me a much more rounded review of general sporting tastes!

Ok here goes (Just filling it in on this thread would be great):

What is your age group?

A. Under 16 B. 16-24 C. 25-34 D. 35-54 E. Over 55s

What type of Television programme would you most like to watch?

A. News B. Sports C. Music D. Other (please say what) [b]Why?B]

How would you like Television programmes to be delivered in the future?

A. Traditional linear scheduling B. On demand through internet / cable TV C. Mobile phone D. DVD releases E. Other (please say what) [b]Why?B]

What type of news do you most enjoy, or for a better word do you find most interesting and need to know?

A. Politics B. Sport C. Entertainment D. Business E. Home News F. World News G. Other (please say what) Why?

What makes you filter between different broadcasters in terms of choice when watching the news? i.e. most of the channels report on the same kind of news but why do you personally choose one channel over the other?

Which news / current affairs programme of recent times have you most enjoyed / not enjoyed?

A. Newsnight B. Newsround C. Working Lunch D. Sunday AM Why?

How long should features be before you're likely to get bored and turn over?

A. 3-5 mins B. 6-10 mins C. 11 mins + Can you give some examples of where items have dragged on for so long in news programmes you looked for a more fast-paced offering elsewhere? Why was this?

What types of new exciting features would you like included in your most ideal of regular news shows? Anything you like, cost is not an issue!

What is the role of TV in today's media landscape and how do you see it surviving well into the 21st century?

Do you think a good idea would be to develop a news magazine programme based on the traditional school newspaper format?

A. Yes B. No C. Maybe Why?

Ok that's it, you've been a HUGE help! I'll try and let you know how the project develops...

Many thanks again

Rothwell, you're not clever and you're not funny.

Stop acting like some big-shot. It doesn't work.

This is hardly a trollish thread...and the BIG picture of the bus is unnecessary

Either way, an Internet forum (where there can be ballot stuffers, incorrect answers and large pictures of buses) is NOT the right place to be doing a questionnaire for an A-level project.

Exactly.

A small picture of a train would have been perfectly adequate.

Here, i'll do it for you. I know too well what it's like having to do these questionnaires being A Level Media student myself lol

What is your age group?

B. 16-24

What type of Television programme would you most like to watch?

A. News - interested in day to day affairs and looking into a journalism career in the future.

How would you like Television programmes to be delivered in the future?

B. On demand through internet / cable TV - consumer 'choice' is the way foward. Viewers are becoming more and more demanding about choosing when they can watch because our lives are too busy to work with traditional scheduling.

What type of news do you most enjoy, or for a better word do you find most interesting and need to know?

F. World News - I can get an insight into the news which isn't local to me.

What makes you filter between different broadcasters in terms of choice when watching the news? i.e. most of the channels report on the same kind of news but why do you personally choose one channel over the other?
I don't know to be honest! I have always watched ITV news at 6PM and 10:30PM as well as my local news (Meridian). I prefer their style and presentation [something many might disagree with on this forum]

Which news / current affairs programme of recent times have you most enjoyed / not enjoyed?
B. Newsround - Like - I think it is a good stepping stone for children to embrace news, with it's lighter and more 'funky' approach to news. Although I have grown up a lot from Newsround (honest lol) I still think it fills its purpose well.
D. Sunday AM - dislike - Just find the style of it very dated to be honest.

How long should features be before you're likely to get bored and turn over?

A. 3-5 mins - A story should never be too long. It should simply say what when why where how. Unless, it is something major (such as a breaking story like 9/11 which would require a lot more attention I believe). A time when a news item was too over stretched was when Kate Mc Cann was made a 'suspect'. A whole 1 hour special was not necessary at all on ITV1 (even though it did fill a potentially boring programme - 'That Anthony Cotton Show'). A simple news flash would have done the job perfectly.

What types of new exciting features would you like included in your most ideal of regular news shows? Anything you like, cost is not an issue!
I think there should be abit of European coverage. For example, I sometimes watch French news (being a French A Level student) and they cover a lot more news concerning European countries; not a huge amount, but enough. We have enough coverage on America, so why can't we have more European?

What is the role of TV in today's media landscape and how do you see it surviving well into the 21st century?
An unfortunate majority of viewers seem to be more concerned with bog-standard junk reality shows these days. We are already witnessing TV on the decrease as ITV plan to cut their local news stations down drastically, and it seems the alternative is indeed the internet, as, in ITV's case, ITV Local is becoming their way of bringing local coverage to the audience. Hopefully television won't completely go, but TV companies are going to have to embrace the Internet a lot more.

Do you think a good idea would be to develop a news magazine programme based on the traditional school newspaper format?

I don't really get what you mean here but I am going to say no anyway. Blogging is the new way foward (such as my own school blog lol www.howard-school.blogspot.com )

Hope I have said enough for your Media Studies and good luck!

Hi Good people of TV Forum,
What is your age group?

B

What type of Television programme would you most like to watch?

D. Comedies, Entertainment, Drama

How would you like Television programmes to be delivered in the future?

E. A mix of Traditional scheduling, and on-demand through the TV and internet.

What type of news do you most enjoy, or for a better word do you find most interesting and need to know?

G. It depends but mostly Home and World News

What makes you filter between different broadcasters in terms of choice when watching the news? i.e. most of the channels report on the same kind of news but why do you personally choose one channel over the other?

Usually because of the standard of journalism, for example I'd prefer to watch BBC News 24 for breaking news, because ITV News and Sky News tend to be quite tabloid-y. However there is a plan to go back to basics for ITV News so my opinion might change.

Which news / current affairs programme of recent times have you most enjoyed / not enjoyed?

N/A

How long should features be before you're likely to get bored and turn over?

B. (It also depends on the newsworthy-ness of the story)

What types of new exciting features would you like included in your most ideal of regular news shows? Anything you like, cost is not an issue!

Well this answer isn't strictly news, but this is more for ITV Regional/National news; they need up-to-date weather graphics. The current ones a appalling and look like they were designed on paint, it's very hard to picture that 3/4 years ago the regions had good weather graphics reduced to rubbish.

What is the role of TV in today's media landscape and how do you see it surviving well into the 21st century?

One word - The Internet. More and more people are watching TV using a computer or through online streaming. Take YouTube for example it has millions of visitors per day but has had disputes against media companies over copyright. Some media companies have embraced it, and allowed clips of programmes to be uploaded, and some such as Viacom have decided to sue YouTube for damages. From this scenario I believe the Broadcasting industry needs to adapt a online presence to new media, it can also potentially give an opportunity for increasing profits in this sector. I personally am finding myself watching less TV and more TV shows online. There's more choice, and you can even watch old programmes that are no longer broadcasting on air anymore.

Do you think a good idea would be to develop a news magazine programme based on the traditional school newspaper format?

No

What is your age group?

What type of Television programme would you most like to watch?

D. Documentaries as I find them the most useful.

How would you like Television programmes to be delivered in the future?

A. TRADITIONAL LINEAR SCHEDULING otherwise I'll never watch TV again.

What type of news do you most enjoy, or for a better word do you find most interesting and need to know?

F. World News

What makes you filter between different broadcasters in terms of choice when watching the news? i.e. most of the channels report on the same kind of news but why do you personally choose one channel over the other?

I find the BBC are the professional so I watch BBC News. I sometimes watch ITV News just to see if they've improved yet, but they never do.

Which news / current affairs programme of recent times have you most enjoyed / not enjoyed?

A. Newsnight

How long should features be before you're likely to get bored and turn over?

B. 6-10 mins

What types of new exciting features would you like included in your most ideal of regular news shows? Anything you like, cost is not an issue!

The news doesn't need any 'new exciting features'. ITV have dabbled with 'new exciting features' and look where it's got them Confused

What is the role of TV in today's media landscape and how do you see it surviving well into the 21st century?

I find TV to be the most up to date and most accessible source of information. Even the internet isn't as good.

Do you think a good idea would be to develop a news magazine programme based on the traditional school newspaper format?

B. No
