"Those of you with better things to do might not know that the media mogul Murdoch is being questioned about the tactics some of his reporting staff undertook, including wire taps, paying for news tips and generally beating the competition to shreds with scoops. In response, politicians are clamoring for a chance to say – on camera – how horrified they are about the entire ordeal. Simply horrified."

Guess who?

There it is.

He was clearly well briefed in who Louise Mensch is, considering he asked her whether David Cameron should resign...
I think she answered the question about Piers Morgan quite well. Taking a leaf out of the Murdoch's book too.

Instead, he noted the actual reason for the ban: Parliamentary footage could not be used in any satirical programming.

Considering the important role that satire plays in British culture, I find this rule just astonishing. Shocked It sounds like some petty prohibition one would expect in a vain dictatorship, and even there, I'm sure that civil liberties groups would be complaining.

I assume that this is just some outdated rule/law that has somehow remained on the books?

After reading around on this a bit, it would appear that the rules about TV coverage were updated just last year, and this one was deemed to be necessary. Louise Mensch has announced that she'll push for it to be changed when Parliament resumes.

Interesting that both BBC World and CNNI have broken into normal programming to take Piers Morgan live at Levenson enquiry. He must be a global megastar of Michael Jackson proportions. I bet he's loving it.

I think CNN will obviously show it because he is now works for them. I guess whatever you think of him, he is known quite well on both sides of the Atlantic.

Is this story big outside of the UK? That is more the surprise to me. I considered it to be only of interest within the UK in the main.
