I hate to be the one to raise the question... but what is the advantage of these purpose built studios apart from their view, which at times is questionable as to be any real great benefit.
As has been pointed out, there are sound and lighting issues (weather dependant) - is the drop in the quality of the output really justified when they could just show the same view behind the presenter in the usual studios whilst retaining a decent standard of broadcasting.
I'm sure they may improve certain aspects, but then issues like sound should have been spotted before going to air.
First time I've actually seen it.... Wow a round table in a black void that sounds horrid and looks like the colour temp is too hot. Nice job beeb. Way to look after your flagship news programme.

I really think this event more than most highlights the benefits of being on location - even if that location is a matter of miles away from the main studio - the building atmosphere just seems to oooze through the screen.
And of course the purpose built studios I guess offer them a better environment than just having a host on an open balcony or even at ground level. I guess to with the BBC having the rights that ITN might not get the opportunity to send Mark Austin to present amongst the people in Olympic Park.

I've been thinking the exact same thing. Apart from the backdrop, these studios are nothing special and if anything have poor lighting and sound. I think broadcasting full bulletins from them makes no sense, particularly at this early stage (perhaps they could have started Friday but even then the Olympics is not going to be the
only
news). They should have split it half between N6 and the Olympic studio in a similar fashion to what the News Channel are doing. For the 1, Sophie in the Olympic Park and Simon in N6, and then for the 6 and 10, George in the Olympic Park and Fiona in TC7/N6. I think today in particular, with the phone hacking charges, has made the whole bulletin entirely in the Olympic studio look a bit silly.

It really does and I've heard a number of 'non presntation anoraks' rave about it yesterday and today.
I love all the Olympic sets and the atmosphere and excitement they bring. The minor sound or lighting issues are really insignificant, for regular viewers. I'm sure it's only people here (who notice everything ) that are aware of them.
Also, any chance to bring NC and national bulletins out of their boring, lifeless set with terrible background should be celebrated, in my opinion.
Wow, there was nothing right about that studio was there!
Bad lighting, sat up noisy pictures, bad lighting, appalling audio, air conditioning hum...
I imagine the pictures were so poor as a compromise to let us see the park, but in reality gave us pictures that were rated at 2/5 at best and audio just as bad.. in other words stuff that shouldn't have been broadcast! If you are having to make those compromises at night its best to move the programme back to a real studio.
It just looks like there was no intelligence involved this set design!
Edit: and it was my wife that noticed it and complained most... The wife that doesn't think there's any difference between SD and HD!
I would have liked if they could have removed the glass behind the presenter for the 1 and 6 o'clock news. As can be seen from the weather presenters position it provides an enhanced view of the stadium and gives more of a feeling of not being too distant and removed from the Olympic stadium as I believe it currently does with the glass windows.
Strangely World has no sound issues at all, in either studio, everything has been running smoothly and they actually broadcast from there all day long. The only smaller thing I noticed yesterday was a bit louder sound of air condition in the second, afternoon, set. They fixed it quickly and we could see Mishal signaling them to turn it down with her hand in a wide shot.
Anyway, love the nigh background on air right now.

It's not caused the same problems for World, who have been broadcasting from the BBC London Olympic studio nearly 24/7.

For the life of me I don't understand why World are broadcasting from the Olympic studio nearly all the time and the Domestic News channel, to whom the main UK viewers are going to want to watch, are not. Or is this the News channel wanting to be typically high-brow.
